Motorists drove into level crossing gates 23 times last year, Iarnród Éireann said. The Merrion Gates initiative marks the first use in more than a decade of automatic cameras to catch motorists breaking red lights. Speaking at the Merrion Gates on Wednesday, Assistant Garda Commissioner for roads policing, Catharina Gunne, said the use of red-light cameras was an important deterrent. “Now that this has been proved [at the Merrion Gates] it should be easier to get the rest of them in,” he said.

Work to begin on 779 new apartments on St Vincent's Hospital site
The Land Development Agency (LDA) announced on Thursday the planned delivery of 779 apartments in Fairview in Dublin on a site at St Vincent's Hospital. The new Richmond Village development is being delivered in partnership with Royalton Developments and Walls Construction and will be constructed on the site of St. Vincent’s Hospital (SVH) in Fairview, just over two kilometres northwest of Dublin city centre. Planning permission was secured for the project in 2023 by Royalton Developments. In addition to the residential development, a new, state-of-the-art 51-bed medical facility will be delivered separately by Royalton Developments and Walls for St. Vincent’s. China suspends beef exports from Ireland following bluetongue outbreak
Following the confirmation of bluetongue in Ireland, China has suspended all beef imports. The General Administration of Customs China (GACC) was informed of the outbreak and subsequently decided to suspend acceptance of Irish beef exported from Ireland with effect from January 27. Under the protocol governing the beef trade between Ireland and China, the Irish Government is required to notify the authorities in China of an outbreak of certain notifiable diseases, including bluetongue. Across the subsequent herds, two herds have one infected animal, and the remaining herd has two infected cattle. “Early detection has been a crucial part of our strategy against the bluetongue virus and the rapid response reflects my department’s commitment to that,” Mr Heydon said.

Leading Irish chefs to celebrate Dublin Michelin ceremony with pop-up series
Restaurants and teams taking part in the three-day series of pop-ups include Row Wines, Hang Dai, Sister 7, Frank’s, Bar 1661 and Rei Momo. The Michelin Guide Britain and Ireland ceremony will make its Irish debut on Monday, February 9th, while Chef Sessions will run from February 7th – 9th. The Irish Times chef columnist Moriarty will join cocktail bar Bar 1661 in Egan’s pub on Aungier Street, where patrons will be offered a breakfast muffin with a cocktail. The event will take place on the Saturday before the ceremony from 6pm till late and cost €20 per person. Each venue featured in the Chef Sessions will manage their own booking system, with tickets available through their websites and social media.
