New rental reforms being introduced by the Government will "rip up vital protections" instead of helping, Labour has said. Labour leader Ivana Bacik said the Government was “dressing deregulation up as reform” with its updated rent regulations. During leaders’ questions on Wednesday, Ms Bacik said the latest change in rental laws was a “chaotic intervention”. “Nationwide rent pressure zones sound meaningful until you read the small print, because allowing landlords to reset rents to market value between tenancies will rip up the vital protections altogether,” Ms Bacik said. Ms Bacik called for the Government to introduce a rent freeze to give “real breathing space” for tenants.

The Irish forecaster warned that heavy rain, combined with saturated grounds and high river levels, could lead to more flooding. The warnings come as the clean up begins in areas hit by heavy flooding earlier in the week caused by Storm Chandra. Heavy winds and torrential rain on Tuesday caused significant disruption across the island of Ireland, including power outages, flight cancellations and 300 school closures in Northern Ireland. The scale of the flooding in some areas has heaped pressure on forecaster Met Eireann and the government over whether the warnings issued were sufficient. Minister for Housing and Local Government James Browne said that information should not be “guarded” and he had asked Met Eireann to look at how they assess what level of weather warning is warranted.

Sydney Sweeney stunned as she modelled risqué lingerie sets in a racy new photoshoot for her brand, Syrn. Her new lingerie label SYRN was unveiled earlier this week, when a promotional stunt saw her hang bras on the iconic Hollywood Sign. I wanted to build a lingerie brand that feels like it understands women instead of talking at them. The Daily Mail has also reached out to Sweeney's representatives and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, but has not heard back, at this time. The Hollywood Sign, one of Los Angeles' most protected landmarks, has long been off-limits to climbers and stunts - with previous unauthorized attempts resulting in arrests and fines.

Sir, – “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” – George Orwell, 1984. If we reject the truth we witness with our eyes and our ears on the killings in the streets of Donald Trump’s United States, then not only will American democracy perish, our own democracy will also eventually perish alongside it. We cannot allow ourselves to be deceived. – Yours, etc,MICHAEL MARTIN,Clonsilla,Dublin 15.

The halving of pathology services for post-mortem examinations in the south east is delaying funerals and making grief even more difficult for families, a priest has warned. Since January 2, pathology services for coroner-directed post-mortem examinations are being provided three days a week by locum pathologists who travel from the UK. The new system replaces the seven-day service provided until January 1 by pathologists based at University Hospital Waterford. The move was feared to result in lengthy funeral delays, with up to 700 coroner-directed post-mortem examinations held yearly at the hospital. Hospitals are withdrawing from the provision of coronial post-mortem examinations.

Irish dairy industry leaders have said they are disappointed that the EU–India Free Trade Agreement struck this week offers “no early gains” for the sector. High Indian tariffs on cheese, milk powders and dairy-based nutritional products remain unchanged, while there has been no movement on sanitary, technical or product approval requirements.
