Ex-army chief’s wife denies receiving illicit funds
KUALA TERENGGANU: The wife of former army chief Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, was charged at the Sessions Court here with receiving proceeds from unlawful activities amounting to RM5,000 last year. The court then granted bail on the same terms as those previously imposed by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, with similar conditions. The judge also fixed March 30 for mention and allowed the case to be transferred to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to be tried together with the earlier case involving Salwani. On the same day, her husband, Muhammad Hafizuddeain, 58, was charged at another Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on four counts of receiving proceeds from illegal activities amounting to more than RM2.12mil. He was subsequently charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court last Friday on two additional counts involving RM145,000 for the same offence.

GBV taskforce proposes chemical castration for child sex offenders
[Boniface Okendo, Standard]The Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence has recommended amendments to the Sexual Offences Act, 2006, to introduce mandatory chemical castration for child sex offenders. “If you have a relative or individual repeatedly defiling a child, chemical castration reduces libido and helps protect the child,” she said, adding that the intervention would be accompanied by psychosocial support where necessary. What is chemical castration? Chemical castration is a medical intervention that suppresses the production of sex hormones and is administered through injections, implants, or oral medication. If adopted, Kenya would join countries including Poland, South Korea and Indonesia that have implemented chemical castration as a preventive measure for sexual offences.

Wachira says whenever clinical officers down tools, negotiations often lead to written commitments and timelines, but implementation rarely follows once workers resume duty. In 2021, clinical officers were ordered back to work by the courts, with directions that employers also resolve the outstanding issues. He says Ministry of Health data indicates Kenya requires about 24,000 clinical officers to effectively deliver universal health coverage, yet only about 6,000 are currently serving in public facilities. However, clinical officers insist they will not sign another Return to Work Formula without full implementation of court directives and the CBA.

South Sudan army threat to ‘spare no one’ draws condemnation
“Inflammatory rhetoric calling for violence against civilians, including the most vulnerable, is utterly abhorrent and must stop now,” said the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (Unmiss). Forces aligned to South Sudan’s suspended Vice-President Riek Machar have captured several areas in recent weeks. The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan (UNCHRSS) expressed “grave alarm” at the latest fighting in Jonglei state, north of the capital Juba, where witnesses have described civilians fleeing into swamps. Conflict in South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, broke out in 2013, two years after independence, when President Salva Kiir accused Machar of plotting to overthrow him.

They are thought to be the deadliest nights for protesters so far and these newly verified videos show how Iran's security forces have been violently cracking down on protesters. Multiple clips analysed by BBC Verify and BBC Persian show bodies piled up inside a mortuary at Tehranpars hospital in east Tehran. Footage we verified shows one person in the capital climbing up a post and hitting a surveillance camera several times in an attempt to disable it. In the north-eastern city of Mashhad verified video shows two men dressed in black on a rooftop of a building in daylight.
