“Where we are now, the surest bet is to have ODM stick with UDA to the end. Former ODM deputy chairman William Odhil warned: “We want the ODM leadership led by party leader Oburu Oginga to end rifts within the party. On Sunday last week, ODM held parallel rallies with Winnie addressing a rally in Kibra, Nairobi while Oburu was meeting ODM delegates in Kakamega. Winnie, who is an EALA MP, ODM deputy party leader Godfrey Osotsi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna have broken ranks with the party over the talks with Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections. Dr Oburu, ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga alongside ODM deputy party leaders Abdulswamad Nassir and Simba Arati are backing talks with UDA.

But in Western Kenya, one prison officer is determined to ensure those children are not forgotten. Many children of prisoners remain out of school, exposed to child labour, abuse, and early dropout due to a lack of resources. Another beneficiary, Naomi Wanjala, whose husband is serving a 20-year sentence, said PCM rescued her children from an uncertain future. As the children at the Bungoma center clutched their new stationery and looked towards the future once thought out of reach, the impact of the initiative is already evident. By keeping vulnerable children in school, Wafula is quietly breaking a cycle of stigma and neglect that often shadows incarceration.

As Gachagua positions the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as the primary Mt Kenya political vehicle, disputes over nominations have begun to surface, triggering exits from the young party. Kamau, who had declared interest in the Murang’a governor seat on the DCP ticket, said his decision to take a break was due to “reasons beyond my control”. “There will be no direct tickets,” Gachagua said. “I have heard there is a young man challenging Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa on a DCP ticket,” the former DP said. While party primaries are popular in principle, they often leave behind disgruntled losers, especially in regions where securing a party ticket is effectively equivalent to winning an election.

The riders were joined by other pedestrians in attacking the matatu, shattering its panes before they set it on fire, police said. The incident caused heavy traffic disruptions and sparked condemnation from the Motorists Association of Kenya and renewed fears over the rising trend of mob justice by boda boda riders following road accidents. There are calls to regulate the boda boda industry at large as part of efforts to address such incidents.

The Star’s latest editorial strikes a nerve that every Kenyan knows is raw: the bursary system is broken. Instead, we have 290 constituency fiefdoms with 290 different sets of rules. A centralized system, like the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) or a capitation model, would ensure funds follow the learner. Instead, we have 290 constituency fiefdoms with 290 different sets of rules. It is a clarion call for the Ministry of Education to reclaim its mandate and end the bursary lottery once and for all.

PETALING JAYA: If dashcam were to be made mandatory for commercial vehicles, it must come with clear guidelines, says an e-hailing association. Currently, e-hailling operators do not provide dashcam, hence drivers would pay out of their pocket for dashcams. “A basic dashcam typically costs around RM100 to RM300, which adds to the drivers’ existing operating costs. His car came with a front camera and he is now planning to install a dashcam for the back. Astrid Lye, 40, said she was reluctant to install a dashcam as that would require the service of a mechanic.

President William Ruto revealed that he personally intervened to stop demolitions in the sprawling Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlement after chaotic scenes and protests erupted earlier in the week. The demolitions, which began on Tuesday, involved bulldozers and security forces moving into the settlement as residents sought to block the exercise. "Juzi niliona kuna watu wameenda kubomolea watu pale Mukuru, nikawaambia wasimamishe na wawache ujinga. Instead, he said the government must work with Kenyans, explain plans, and provide alternative settlement options. The high-tension demolitions, linked to an attempted expansion of feeder roads inside the settlement, triggered fierce responses from residents and local leaders.

Dr Ida Odinga. [Boniface Okendo, Standard]The nomination of Canon Dr Ida Betty Odinga as Kenya’s top diplomat to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has ignited a familiar political debate, balancing praise for her decades of service against claims the move is a trap to weaken ODM. The appointment, announced by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, is intended to crown Ida’s lifetime of advocacy. In a letter from State House, Mr Koskei stated that President William Ruto had, “in exercise of the prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government, nominated Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, E.G.H., for appointment as Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).”

Inefficiency here does not stay within the harbour walls—it ripples outward, inflating business costs, delaying cargo, and eroding regional competitiveness. It acknowledged a fundamental truth: port efficiency cannot be mandated from headquarters alone. For Mombasa to retain its premier status, efficiency must evolve from an aspiration into a measurable, sustained reality. What stands out in the leadership of Mr Wattanga and Cap Ruto is their recognition that institutional silos strangle port performance. Ultimately, this renewed commitment by KRA and KPA presents an opportunity to reset the narrative around the Port of Mombasa.
