Effective electoral planning and budgeting is critical here, and is also dependent on strong political will and institutional reforms. Comprehensive planning and support to the NEC and the Government of Liberia on Effective Electoral Planning and Budgeting and Procurement processes will decrease electoral costs ahead of elections. When there is a high level of transparency and integrity in the electoral process, it, in turn, contributes to minimizing any tension and unnecessary risks of violence.

MONROVIA – The regional Secretary-General of the West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF), Komlan Messie has called on the Government of Liberia to create a vibrant environment for civil society to flourish and support its development effort, as well as fostering and pushing the agenda of ECOWAS. “We want to take this opportunity to call on the government to open the civic space for its citizens to get involved because civil society organizations are complimenting the work of the authorities,” Mr. Messie said, at a one-day engagement workshop with the Liberian civil society organizations in Monrovia. “They are not opposition, they are not political parties, they are civil society organizations. “A political party’s ultimate goals is not to take state power in a country but civil society groups are neutral, while their role is to advocate for social justice and against societal ills,” he cautioned. The real enemies of Liberia remain “Ignorance, Disease and Poverty” as the late President William R. Tolbert averred about 50 years ago. Speaking at the close of the worship service, Bishop Brown concurred with many Liberians who believe that the country remains under-developed after 174 years of independence. After 174 years, the majority of the people are still languishing in hunger and poverty while the same politicians run from one political party to another. About four years, President George M. Weah who spent twelve years in the Opposition assumed the political mantle of the nation. The country will be helped if we combined to fight corruption, ignorance, disease, poverty, hunger, tribalism, sectarianism, etc.

VOINJAMA, Lofa County – The superintendent of Lofa County, William Tamba Kamba, wants permanent commercial banks established in the county to help promote trade and development. As of the 2008 Census, Lofa had a population of 276,863, making it the third-most populous county in Liberia. The superintendent said the absence of a permanent commercial bank is hindering the development of businesses and exposing residents to risks. However, despite all the commercial transactions, which generate large sums of money, the area lacks a commercial bank to facilitate the trade. Kamba explains that robbers have taken advantage of the absence of a commercial bank to regularly rob traders of their daily proceeds.
