Capitol Hill, Monrovia – The House of Representatives has ratified two financing agreements in the tone of US$42.5 million between Liberia and the International Development Association (IDA). The House’s decision to pass this agreement was based on the recommendation of the Joint Committee on Ways, Means & Finance, Public Accounts and Judiciary. With that, the Joint Committee added that there will be 64 different payments, and each installment shall be 1.5625% of the principal amount of the credit payable. Of the total, US$14 million is in the form of grant, and the remaining US$20 million as credit. The main objectives of the agreement, the Committee outlined, are to remove distortions in selected sectors and strengthened public-sector transparency, as well as promoting economic and social inclusion.

Sacramento, CA – The Liberian media, civil society organizations, and the religious communities in Liberia have been called upon to play a pivotal role in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Three former leaders of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Isaac D.E. The former PUL leaders stated that the COVID-19 vaccines that are officially available in Liberia are certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be safe. “Accordingly, we are hopeful that taking the vaccines will prevent more deaths, serious illnesses and hospitalization which the population is experiencing,” they said. The former PUL leaders added that the recent alarming death rate in Liberia is a matter of national emergency, which must be tackled by rebuilding the country’s very broken health system.

In the past few years, and sine the sitting of the 54th Legislature and inauguration of President George Weah, there have been debates on how to proceed with the implementation of the TRC Report. On September 12, 2019, President George Weah wrote the Senate requesting the body to advice on how to proceed with the implementation of the report of the TRC. The Senate also recommended that the Transitional Justice Commission establishment should be enacted into law. The recommendations also called on the Liberian government to establish a Reparation Trust Fund. It will help provide psychosocial relief for victims suffering from psychosocial and physical scars of the war, and other community-based reparation programs as indicated in the TRC Report.

On Friday, Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah, in a live radio broadcast, announced a set of revised health measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. Aaron Mason, speaking to FPA, complained that the Ministry of Health was not handling the process in line with its own health protocols it has announced. Jerome Verdier that they received a hefty bribe to quash the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia. In his testimony before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission hearing on establishing a War Crimes & Economic Crimes Court for Liberia on Monday, Cllr. At no point in time this august body has received any money from the Executive to hold down any war crimes issues in Liberia,” he debunked. MONROVIA – Ninety-two security officers, of both the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) and Liberia National Police (LNP) have completed training in special arm usage from the Liberia National Police Academy in Paynesville. The training lasted for the period of one and half month and enabled participating officers to take assignment at various border points to Liberia. He said the fire arm training marks the first of its kind for officers of the Liberia Immigration Service, lauding the Liberia National Police and international partners for the exercise. “With these kinds of threats unfolding, Liberia did not have the capacity to protect the border, so training of these officers is important. At the same time, Liberia National Police Inspector General Patrick Sudue has admonished LIS officers at borders point not to ignore COVID-19, but to keep enforcing preventive measures.

Tubmanburg – The Multi-Action Platform on land governance and responsible agriculture investment, an advocacy group championing land rights in Liberia, has emphasized the need for the implementation of the Land Rights Act. “The Act has been passed into law, but the Liberia Land Map Platform says there is a serious need to implement the Act so that community members will have an insight on it. It focuses on providing information on land rights across all sectors,” Paasewe said. He said the training will strengthen actor’s capacities on Map Action Plan and Multi-Stakeholders Partnership processes in implementing Land Rights Act across Liberia. Under its decentralization plan, the MAP Liberia Land Platform seeks to be extended firstly in two regions: Western, and South-east Liberia.

Liberia Returnee Network is a non-governmental organization advocating for the better living condition for Liberians that have returned from refugees’ camps across Africa. Recently, over 600 returnees that were brought into the country since 2011 expressed dismay that they have been neglected by the government of Liberia through the LRRRC.
