Pre-Existing Social, Economic Conditions and Large Informal Population, Increases Liberia’s Vulnerability to COVID-19 Economic Shock
Together with the private sector, health authorities in the country were quick in creating awareness among the population. In Liberia, like most of sub-Sahara Africa, this meant social exposure of the vulnerable population especially those in the informal sector. Liberia’s informal sector makes up about 85% of the workforce. This large segment of the population is the most vulnerable due to undesirable working, health and safety conditions. Just as people with pre-existing underlying health condition are more susceptible to COVID-19, developing countries like Liberia with pre-existing social and economic conditions, are more vulnerable to the economic downturn imposed by the virus.

Did “Dr.” Dukule, the administration he served, and all the copious outpour of international goodwill deliver a grain of rice to anyone in this country? “Dr.” Dukule cannot claim better capacity when the sum evidence of the capacity of 12 years of rule marked Liberia’s trajectory into unimaginable governance failure by 2017. Certainly, Dr. Dukule is not claiming any better competency and capacity for himself and those with whom he served for 12 years. The Weah administration has threaded where ‘angels feared’ in bringing Liberia’s governance to its apex of transparency and accountability.

Liberia: Street Sellers Fear Being Left Out of Stimulus Package
Having used their funds to sustain their families for the last two months of lockdown, sellers are in need of support. With the controversies that have marred the distribution of the food package, many street peddlers fear they will be left out as the country slowly returns to normalcy. This US$30 million aid package comprises US$25 million of funds redirected from the government’s 2019/2020 fiscal budget and US$5 million donated by the World Bank. Activist Martin Kollie, based in Ethiopia, has blasted the government in several Facebook posts over the lockdown package. “The US$25 million food distribution started on May 23 and ended in one hour on the same day,” he quips in one.

However, Gbeisay has has placed the trial of the indicted ex-CBL officials on the Court’s (Criminal Court C) docket for the May Term of Court. However, during the hearing of the motion, State lawyers argued that the court cannot grant defendant Weeks alone speedy trial as he was indcited along with other defendants. During the conference, all the parties( State lawyers and the defendants lawyers) agreed that the case be placed on the court docket for the May Term of Court. Base on the agreement, the case has now been placed on the court’s docket for trial during the May Term of Court.
