We call on all struggling Liberians – struggling students, struggling youth, struggling market women, struggling teachers and farmers, struggling civil servants, struggling health workers, struggling Liberian business owners – who are in fact in their majority, disproportionally to the number of well-off Liberians milking from our nation’s resources to boycott the 173rd Independence Celebrations,” Amb. The United Nation’s Women’s Empowerment Principles is a good way to show our focus. The United Nation’s Women Empowerment Principles are seven and include: treating all women and men fairly at work, employee health, well-being and safety, education and training for gender equality, and measurement and reporting. Signing up to the principles, means that Bridge can act as a role model for other organisations in the country and a champion of female empowerment issues. More importantly it sends a clear signal to female students, teachers and employees about the commitment and support that it has for the female empowerment agenda. Signing up to the UN’s WEPs shows even greater commitment from Bridge to women empowerment and places greater responsibility upon the entity to ensure zero tolerance to any act inimical to women advancement.

This publication linking the Liberian Red Cross to such employment is not only shocking and unbelievable, it is actually embarrassing, unexpected and totally unacceptable. This undermines our fundamental principles and human resource policy as Melvin Sahr has no employment record with the Liberian Red Cross. The Liberian Red Cross, as a member of the global Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, maintains a very neutral and independent statute globally and nationally. The Red Cross is not an entity of Government that requires presidential appointees to be confirmed. Our international integrity, commitment to neutrality based on our fundamental principles have been tampered with and thus causing international discredit for the Red Cross.
