The reports are the 10th and 11th Liberia has released since being a member of the IEITI in more than a decade. The two reports have already been endorsed by the Multi-stakeholder Steering Group (MSG) of EITI. According to the LEITI, the MSG in October 2019 commissioned BDO-UK in collaboration with Parker & Associates Liberia to compile the two reports. Before the publication of the two reports, Liberia was already suspended by the IEITI and was racing against time to be delisted. CEO Mohammed V. Kamara made the call over the week after returning from Cotonou, Benin, where he represented Liberia at the General Convention of West African Rice Production. Kamara narrated that he gave a detail insight of Liberia’s rice sector, including production and land acquisition. He used the occasion to urge Liberians to be mindful with eating imported foods especially rice; adding: “Most of the imported rice do not go through laboratory processes showing the understanding of production and expiry dates. USA – The National Patriotic Party (NPP) USA chapter says it is baffled about the constant revelations of security threats on the person of its standard bearer and Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Jewel Howard-Taylor with no statement or remedial action from the leadership of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). The NPP says it acknowledges the deteriorating political economic situations in the country, but encouraged President George Weah to revert to the preamble of the coalition’s Memorandum of Understanding. I am just afraid for my life,” said Martha, who currently lives in the United States of America for fears that some unknown individuals are after her life. Before her departure to the United States, Martha escaped several death threats at the hands of the alleged criminals. Martha is already suffering from the trauma of losing her husband and children as a result of the civil war in Liberia. According to a closed neighbor, the alleged criminals extorted US$300 from the children before burning the house. Martha’s children and grandchildren returned from Ivory Coast in September 2019 and were residing in the house when the incident occurred.

Monrovia – The Independent Council of Patriots has announced that it will stage an alternative peaceful assembly against the Council of Patriots. Speaking Monday, January 6, with reporters in Monrovia, ICOP Chairman Rufus Neufville said all is now set for the planned assembly slated for Saturday, January 11, 2020. He said the peaceful Assembly is intended to protect the peace and constitutional democracy that is now being enjoyed by every Liberian. Neufville disclosed that the ICOP assembly is based on a permit received from the Ministry of Justice on Friday, January 3. The ICOP Chair has, therefore, assured Liberians of a peaceful assembly on January 11, that would “present a clear picture of the reality on the grounds in Liberia”.

Monrovia – Representative Yekeh Y. Kolubah of Montserrado County District #10 has rubbished claims that he was carrying guns in his vehicles during Monday’s mass anti-government protest. Rep. Kolubah, a key member of the Council of Patriots (COP) was one of the thousands of protesters that were sprayed with water cannon and teargas by the Liberia National Police (LNP). The police impounded the cars and later announced that it found several weapons including a 9-Millimeter Lugar black pistol with one magazine and four rounds and a barrister Pistol in two of the vehicles belonging to Rep. Kolubah. However, in his first interview following the incident, Rep. Kolubah said he does not own a gun and the purported discovery of firearms in his vehicles was a calculated plot of the Government of Liberia to falsely incriminate him. The ANC added the action by the LNP subjected protesters to fear, suffering, injury and risk of death.
