Ruins from the Garamantian kingdom in what is now the southwestern region of Libya. A unique method of obtaining underground water enabled the Garamantes to thrive in the Sahara more than 2,000 years ago, long after the region became a desert. "They were lucky to have this world-class aquifer," Frank Schwartz , a hydrogeologist at The Ohio State University, told Live Science. But the climate changed and the Sahara became"hyper-arid" by the time the Garamantian kingdom arose in about 400 B.C., he said. Instead, the Garamantian foggaras tapped an ancient subterranean aquifer that had formed in the nearby sandstone highlands tens of millions of years earlier and had been "topped up" during the Green Sahara phases.

Thirty people in distress on a small boat in Malta’s search and rescue (SAR) zone were intercepted by a vessel belonging to the Libyan Tarek Ben Zayed militia group on Monday in another pushback, which humanitarian NGO AlarmPhone says was aided by the Maltese government. 🆘~30 people in distress in the SAR zone of #MaltaWe were called by 30 people in distress who had fled from #Sirte, #Libya 2 days ago. On Friday, the commercial vessel Nippon Princess heeded the distress call and looked for the smaller boat but could not find it. By Monday, AlarmPhone confirmed the pushback by the Libyan TBZ vessel and “condemned Malta’s role in pushbacks.”Last July, 250 people in distress on a small boat in Malta’s SAR zone were intercepted by the same vessel and pushed back to Libya. In May, a group of four humanitarian NGOs, which included Alarm Phone and Sea Watch, accused Malta of coordinating another “criminal mass pushback” of 500 migrants to prison in Libya straight from Malta’s own SAR.

Francis responded that that chaos was due in part to ‘the failure of the West in its attempt to import its own type of democracy’ in some countries around the world. Pope Francis cited the examples of Western intervention in Libya and Iraq in arguing that the West should not “export” democracy to other countries, according to a recently published interview. Francis responded that that chaos was due in part to “the failure of the West in its attempt to import its own type of democracy” in some countries around the world. “We are thinking of Libya, which seems to be led only by very strong personalities such as Gaddafi,” the Pope said. “I therefore believe that we must not export our democracy to other countries, but help them to develop a process of democratic maturation according to their characteristics,” Francis said.

The pope’s comments were published in the Italian newspaper La Stampa and excerpted from a book released this week by journalists Francesca Ambrogetti and Sergio Rubin, “You Are Not Alone: Challenges, Answers, Hopes.”In an excerpt from the book, the pope was asked by the authors about “the responsibilities of the most developed countries” for the “chaos” being experienced by other nations.
