CAIRO – 1 November 2022: The 31st Arab Summit kicked off in Algeria with the participation of several leaders and presidents along with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki. The inaugural session began with a speech for the Tunisian President Kais Saied who handed over the presidency of the 31st Arab Summit to the Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune. President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi headed Tuesday to Algeria to attend the 31st Arab Summit taking place on November 1-2. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry flew to Algeria on Friday to take part in meetings of the Arab League (AL) council, preceding the summit. The Pharmacy and Medical Supplies Department at the Ministry of Health convened a meeting on Monday that grouped directors of pharmacy services in hospitals and medical centres to discuss primary issues related to the field, most notably the development of an electronic system to track vital medicines. The officials recommended that a scientific opinion be attached to any medicine ordered outside the national list, according to the Health Ministry. They also agreed on the need to follow up on imports, expenses, and stocks between the Ministry of Health and the pharmacy departments. The participants exchanged notes on implementing successful policies to recycle stagnant medicines and control imports, as they emphasized that clearance from the Ministry of Health is necessary before importing or dispensing any free medicine samples, in particular, newly used ones.

CAIRO - 1 November 2022: Trade exchange between Egypt and the Arab countries increased by 19.2 percent during the first half of 2022, to record $14.4 billion, compared to $12.1 billion during the same period in 2021, according to a report by the Central Agency For Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). CAPMAS revealed that Egypt’s exports to Arab countries amounted to $5.9 billion during the first half of 2022, compared to $5.4 billion during the same period in 2021, marking an increase of $466.5 million or 8.6 percent. Sudan’s exports to Egypt recorded $261.6 million, followed by Jordan at $120.7 million, Lebanon at $108.4 million, Libya at $51.5 million, and Qatar at $39.5 million. The value of remittances from Egyptians working in Arab countries increased 10.9 percent to reach $21.9 billion during the fiscal year 2020/21, compared to $19.8 billion during the fiscal year 2019/2020. The value of Arab countries’ investments in Egypt recorded $3.98 billion during the fiscal year 2020/2021, compared to $4 billion during the fiscal year 2019/2020, marking a decrease of 0.4 percent.

Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush discussed the situation in the country with U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Yael Lempert, during a meeting today on the sidelines of Arab League Council summit in Algeria. Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, announced on Monday that his government plans to reopen border with Sudan. The Tripoli-based premier made the announcement during his opening speech of the “Free Zone for Transit Trade” economic forum, organized by the Libyan-Sudanese Chamber of Commerce yesterday in the Libyan capital. Dbeibeh said the move will help resume the movement of goods and people between the two countries. “The closure of the border between Libya and Sudan was something strange, and a move that we don’t accept,” Dbeibeh said.

The Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, met Sunday with the special envoy of the French President to Libya, Paul Soler, and French ambassador, Mostafa Mihraje, who reaffirmed France's continued support for Libya until it reaches the stage of comprehensive stability by electing a president who can lead the country to security. Al-Lafi welcomed the new French ambassador and hailed bilateral relations with Paris and its support for the Libyan political process and dialogue among conflicting parties to reach stability. He reiterated commitment to continuing national reconciliation efforts to reach elections as per a constitutional basis, saying the Security Council's extension of UNSMIL's mandate revived the political track after the stalemate of last months. The two sides also stressed the role of France and the European Union in this file. The French envoy reiterated the importance of the national reconciliation project, and his country's desire to achieve stability in Libya by reaching a political solution that would contribute to the holding of elections based on to a constitutional basis.
