I WOULD like to share my Covid-19 vaccination experience at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on May 20: For an OKU (orang kurang upaya, or disabled) white cane user, it was surprisingly a breeze. Well-organised and detailed assistance was rendered to us as soon as volunteers noticed my white cane. My wife and I were unsure if we could be given our injections at the same time as our appointment times were two-and-a-half hours apart. We arrived at noon and exited the vaccination centre at 12.50pm, and this includes a 20-minute observation period for side effects after the vaccination. Our sincere appreciation to all the medical frontliners and volunteers!

Unity, it seems, is less about agreeing on the majority of issues and more about living with differences of views and perspectives most of the time. One of the major differences my wife and I had early on was the direction our children’s education would take. She preferred that our children socialised with kids from our own race while I wanted them to mix more with others. Even though my wife might not have agreed with my decisions, she kept quiet all through the children’s years at school. I wanted them all in private universities with mostly non-Malay students and lecturers but my wife wanted them all “safely” in public universities.

I find it perplexing that the government can’t even spare about 2500 doses or less of vaccines for reporters. The saddest part of the entire exercise is that you and the government can’t even recognise them as “frontliners”. You and your colleagues are quick to point out the mistakes of my bothers and sisters in the media. Reporters die in conflict areas. President Jokowi announced on Indonesia’s National Press Day (Hari Pers Nasional) on the 9th of February this year that he recognized reporters as “frondliners”.

YESTERDAY, I was about to enter a shopping mall when a woman asked for my help to scan the QR code to check in on her MySejahtera app. Unfortunately, I was unable to help her as there was a technical problem with her handphone. I told her she could check in manually since her handphone had malfunctioned. This happened at another Klang Valley mall four days ago when a woman who doesn’t own a mobile phone wanted to enter the premises. Are the managements of these malls going to deny them entry for not having a mobile phone with the MySejahtera app?
