Intrigued, I spoke to Anas Zubedy of Rasuah Busters and Abim president Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz to get an idea of their initiatives. Anas believed if we managed to mitigate corruption as low as possible, Malaysian politics would be more advanced, deeper, effective and efficient. Abim president Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz gave me a lengthy explanation of his movement’s Bangsa Malaysia concept. On the ground, social media and WhatsApp, I get a sense that some Malaysians are getting fed up with politicians.

THE prevalence of sporadic Covid-19 transmissions shows that there are a lot more undetected positive cases well hidden and widespread among the population. Sporadic transmissions account for about 80% of the current Covid-19 cases in the country, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah earlier this month. Sporadic cases refer to cases where the source of infection is not known, and the cases are not linked to any clusters. According to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba, 60% of the total number of Covid-19 cases recorded between January and April were sporadic, and that the states with the highest number of sporadic Covid-19 cases are Selangor and Johor as well as the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur. Though I write this in memory of my father Ramalingam Ganeson, I dedicate this to all fathers who place service before self and who make unconditional sacrifices for their families. A childless couple known to the family and based in Malaya had expressed an interest in adopting my father. His sporting ability helped him to procure a much-coveted ticket into the prestigious Victoria Institution, so he moved to Kuala Lumpur with his maternal uncle. Enrolling in the Technical College in Kuala Lumpur was his next milestone. Journeying on a bicycle from Kuala Lumpur, he remained there for the rest of his working life.

One year ago, I was known as Patient #33 as I was amongst the earliest Covid-19 patients of the Kayangan cluster. While in hospital, I was captivated by the sacrifices of our frontliners and wrote an anonymous article — Thank You from #33, published by The Edge. If anyone should feel a sense of immunity, it would be an ex-Covid patient like me. In the good old days, according to my dad, people, especially villagers and the plantation folk, feared us, the Malayan tiger, the most. Being a Malayan tiger, we are celebrated; we have legendary aura as king of the Malayan rain forest; we decorate the nation’s coat of arms, and the national football team use us as their name and symbol. At the Global Tiger Summit in 2010, tiger range countries including Malaysia committed to doubling their tiger numbers by 2022. The government has come up with a plan – the National Tiger Conservation Action Plan (NTCAP) – to save my species and the larger ecosystem via the Central Forest Spine Master Plan. I know some of you have contributed, but the funding is inadequate to make real changes in augmenting tiger and biodiversity conservation.
