“A Long Food Movement” — to transform the world food system by 2045 — principally authored by Pat Mooney with a team including IPES-Food director Nick Jacobs, analyses how food systems are likely to evolve over the next quarter century with technological and other changes. The report notes that “hi-tech”, data processing and asset management corporations have joined established agribusinesses in reshaping world food supply chains. If current trends continue, the food system will be increasingly controlled by large transnational corporations (TNCs) at the expense of billions of farmers and consumers. The report warns that giving Big Ag the “keys of the food system” worsens food insecurity and other existential threats. Very timely, “A Long Food Movement” is an urgent call to action for the long haul.

This is not to say that the idea of democracy does not appeal to peoples of different cultures and political background. Democracy in practice today is built around the process of procedural democracy, in which people vote openly, freely and regularly to choose their government. Two important trends mark this decline – US domestic political problems and the reclassification of India, the world’s most populous democracy, from Free to Partly Free status. Political leadership is all about understanding the mood of the moment, seizing the opportunities and organizing the institutions to deliver. When institutional checks and balances fail due to corruption, corrosion or incompetence, then new forms of political leadership arise to challenge the old.

AFTER reading the letter “Utmost good faith principle fall on wayside” (The Star, May 5), I was compelled to write about my own experience with my former insurance company. I signed up for a health policy with a monthly contribution of RM100 (the highest plan) in February 2008. In January this year, I received a call from the insurance company informing me that my plan had lapsed because I had not settled my contributions for one year. To my surprise, the insurance company informed me that my plan had been downgraded from RM100 to RM30 due to my diabetic condition. Is this how an insurance company practises “humanising” as one of its core values?

I REFER to the letter “Medical students in clinical training need vaccination” (The Star, April 27). I fully agree with the writer that medical students who need to do ward visits for their clinical studies, placing them in direct contact with patients, need to be vaccinated. They should have been included under phase one of the National Immunisation Programme together with the Covid-19 frontliners for vaccination. May I add that dental students are in the same boat due to the nature of their training. Hence, medical and dental students undergoing clinical training need to be vaccinated as soon as possible.

As such, he has warned his teammates to be wary of any late surprises when the two sides meet at the City Stadium today. When the two teams first met in March, JDT scored twice late into the match for a 2-0 win. “We can’t afford to switch off for even one minute because we know that it’s never easy when facing JDT. But I believe that with our fans allowed into the City Stadium, it will spur us to raise our game, ” said Somerville. Although he is itching to take to the field, he knows that the final decision will be up to the coach.

The chip shortage came at an inopportune time for automakers as demand rebounded from pandemic lows due to low interest rates and consumers' preference for personal transport amid the health crisis. Ford Motor Co, a major customer for Lear and peers including BorgWarner and Magna International, has said the chip shortage would halve its vehicle output in the second quarter. Auto suppliers also cautioned that the pain from the shortage could linger at least until the next year. "On the biggest raw material purchases, we have about 60% pass through with our customers," BorgWarner Chief Executive Officer Frederic Lissalde said. And that's really an unknown," Magna Chief Financial Officer Vincent Galifi said.
