When a military seizes control of the government, and immediately thereafter offers to bring back 1,200 of its citizens, any reasonable person should ask: Why? This military junta is cracking down harder and harder on Myanmarese who are protesting the coup, through the use of more and more violence. I might also somehow try to use the 1,200 people as leverage against their relatives back home. Some United Nations reports have put the Myanmarese military as having one of the worst human rights records in the world. We ask ourselves again: What is likely to happen to the 1,200 people once they are handed over to the junta?

(Reuters) - Devon Conway rescued New Zealand from a precarious start with a scintillating unbeaten 99 as the hosts defeated Australia by 53 runs in the opener of their five-match Twenty20 series in Christchurch on Monday. Monday's series opener was the first international played under lights at the Hagley Oval and it started after a minute's silence was observed to mark the 10th anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake that killed 185 people. "The key from there was just trying to stay positive throughout," said Conway. "When I'm positive I'm at my best so trying not to think too far ahead, try and play good cricket shots and build partnerships at the end." The second match will be played at Dunedin on Thursday.

Email us at lifestyle@thestar.com.myFor IT service delivery manager Jesvinder Singh, 51, helping others is all about “the value of life”. Jesvinder reveals that some of the patients from his village were elderly folks and they found it difficult to adapt to regular hospital meals because they are used to traditional Punjabi food like chapati. Furthermore, the village was 60km away from the hospital so it wasn’t viable for their family members to commute daily to send meals to them. This enabled them to provide two meals a day and a more varied menu for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian patients. “It’s encouraging because what we started motivated others to do the same – other groups, mainly associations, also started providing food to the patients at the hospital, ” he says.

This is the first time the Chinese military has published the number of casualties, the names of the fallen soldiers and details about the border clash with India. It’s really sad that they could not wait until their wishes came true, but sacrificed their lives on the plateau to protect the country’s sovereignty and safeguard peace at the border, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Friday. But border tension escalated in June as foreign soldiers crossed the Line of Actual Control again in brazen violation of bilateral agreements. Within a short time, the Chinese soldiers expelled the foreign troops who “paid a heavy price”, leaving many injured, the report said. It explained that Chen Hongjun, Chen Xiangrong and Xiao Siyuan died courageously while fighting.
