Cleaning robot Franzi makes sure floors are spotless at the Munich hospital where she works, and has taken on a new role during the pandemic: cheering up patients and staff. I need to clean," trills the robot in German when people block her pre-programmed cleaning route. "Visitors are not allowed in the pandemic, so Franzi entertains the patients a bit," says Constance Rettler of Dr. Rettler, the company in charge of cleaning the Neuperlach hospital that provided the robot. Amused patients take photos of her, and some even stop to chat to the metre-high robot. "While Franzi is cleaning the floors, our employees can concentrate on doing that."

REFERRING to the reports on the launch of the National Unity 2021-2030 Blueprint (The Star, Feb 16), the government’s initiative to strengthen national unity is most timely indeed. As the experts quoted in “Govt urged to drive policy to achieve objectives” say, a national unity policy complete with a blueprint and an action plan is long overdue for Malaysia and must not be wasted. Without doubt, political issues over the past months have negatively impacted our sense of unity, social and religious harmony. We must all strive to uphold key values including mutual respect, reciprocity, moderation and social and religious tolerance. However, well-intentioned blueprints or plans are only one part of the equation.

They cited, among others, the government’s decision to lift interstate travel last December for the surge in cases. It doesn’t matter whether the government allows dining in at restaurants or stipulates how many people can sit at a table. When the government lifts the ban on interstate travel, we should ask whether we should be travelling in the first place. Should we discuss business over the restaurant dining table when we could just Zoom? I wonder how many have criticised ministers for flouting Covid-19 SOPs on social media from a mamak shop long after they had finished their meal?

“The first guideline was issued on June 4 last year, just before we reopened schools but once schools started, there were new issues to consider and we updated them accordingly. The guideline also stressed on the need to maintain the confidentiality of students, teachers and staff infected with the virus, Habibah said. The challenge with the ministry now is students’ compliance with the guidelines, especially among the younger ones (in primary schools), ” she said. Emphasising students and teachers’ safety, teachers aged 50 and above who were not comfortable serving as examination invigilators would not be forced to take up the role, she said. From the survey we conducted, we noticed that there are different timetables and hours used to teach students.
