Kyari, speaking during an interview with Channels TV on Sunday, explained that the subsidy previously created a substantial price gap between Nigeria and its neighbouring countries, making fuel smuggling highly profitable. “Before the subsidy removal, the price difference was huge, and that incentivised smugglers to move fuel across borders,” Kyari noted. He said that eliminating the subsidy has “effectively calibrated fuel prices,” stripping away the profitability of illegal fuel trade. “The removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria has been a game-changer in the fight against cross-border smuggling,” Kyari stated. The subsidy removal, Kyari stressed, not only reduces smuggling but also fosters price parity, contributing to a more stable and fair energy market.

The Federal Government is set to revamp Nigeria’s petroleum distribution systems and address the alarming rate of petrol tanker explosions, according to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri. “The frequent petrol tanker explosions have caused significant loss of lives and property across the country, and this cannot continue,” Lokpobiri stated. He attributed the recurring incidents to Nigeria’s overreliance on road transportation for distributing petroleum products, compounded by outdated pipeline infrastructure. Mohammed stressed the importance of integrating road safety measures into petroleum logistics, given the high volume of trucks transporting hazardous materials. “We are determined to prevent further loss of lives and property by creating a safer, more efficient petroleum distribution system,” he concluded.

China’s military concluded a day of war games near Taiwan on Monday, framing the exercises as a warning against the “separatist acts” of Taiwan’s independence forces. Taiwan, a democratically governed island, had been on high alert for potential military actions following last week’s National Day speech by President Lai Ching-te. In his speech, Lai asserted that China had no right to represent Taiwan, while also expressing a willingness to cooperate with Beijing. His remarks were swiftly condemned by the Chinese government, which regards Taiwan as part of its own territory. “The drill also serves as a stern warning to the separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces.

For us, their victims, the way the regime injects petrol price increments, almost monthly, into our lives makes it look like Doctor Death. On October 5, 1847, Johnstone delivered a lecture at the college on what he themed ‘The Accumulative Action of Medicines, with Some Remarks on Slow Poison’. Jonestone told the woman’s story to illustrate the lethality of slow poison. The way petrol price daily moves up the spiral staircase feels like Madame Marie’s poison. The Nigerian house is damp and dank.

The recent growth of Nigeria’s foreign reserves has come to many as some form of cheery news. In as much as this is a positive development, it is disappointing that this has not helped to stabilise the country’s foreign exchange market, as would be expected. Hardly has any citizen escaped the effect of this negative development in the foreign exchange market. While these steps are laudable, the core issues for a reliable foreign exchange supply need to be investigated meticulously. More work needs to be done, to bring sanity to this all-important foreign exchange market, in the interest of the ordinary Nigerian.
