Ousted Niger President Bazoum visited by his doctor
The ousted Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum, who has been illegally detained by the coup leaders led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani since July was seen by his doctor on Saturday. It was learnt that the physician also brought food for Bazoum, his wife and son who are being held with him. A member of his entourage told AFP, the ousted president “had a visit by his doctor today. The European Union and the African Union have joined others in condemning the overthrow of Bazoum and subsequent detention by the country’s military. The UN rights chief Volker Turk said Bazoum’s reported detention conditions “could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, in violation of international human rights law”.

Russian forces kill six including baby in fresh Ukraine attack
Six people including an infant were killed on Sunday by Russian shelling in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, officials said. “Russia killed six people in the region of Kherson,” Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said on messaging app Telegram. In the village of Shyroka Balka three adults and a 23-day-old baby were killed, he said. In the village of Stanislav another two people were killed.

NDE train graduates, artisans under SPW scheme in Ekiti
The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has flagged off training schemes for graduates and artisans in Ekiti state for skills acquisition and gaining of work experience in public and private entities. The Director General of NDE, Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo who spoke during the flag-off in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said the trainings were under the Graduate Attachment Programme (GAP) and the Environmental Beautification Training Scheme (EBTS) of the Special Public Works department. Represented by the NDE state coordinator, Sanusi Akeem, the DG explained that the GAP training was important to expose the 48 beneficiaries to professional experience by attaching them to offices in the society. Dollar index decreases by 1.6% in July — OPEC
The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has said the U.S. dollar index decreased by 1.6 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m) in July, erasing gains from the previous period. The dollar index rose for the second consecutive month in June, increasing marginally by 0.3 per cent m-o-m.OPEC said this in its Monthly Oil Market Report for August on Friday. According to the OPEC report, Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y), the index was down by 5.2 per cent. The OPEC report said the dollar experienced mixed movement against major developed market currencies for a second consecutive month in July. It said it recovered against the euro by 2.2 per cent m-o-m, but receded against the yen and the pound by 0.2 per cent and 2.2 per cent, respectively, over the same period.

Niger Coup: President Bazoum’s son ‘critically ill’
President Mohamed Bazoum’s son, Salem, is critically ill, ECOWAS leaders were told at their meeting on Thursday, according to an official present at the meeting. The West African leaders were told that Salem had lost about 10 kilograms since he was detained alongside his father following the 26 July coup in Niger. Mr Bazoum’s daughter, Zazia Bazoum, told UK Guardian that her family is living in a very difficult situation. PREMIUM TIMES had reported how the junta leaders prevented the ECOWAS delegation, led by Mr Abubakar, from leaving the Niger airport and meeting with the coup leaders or Mr Bazoum. At the Thursday meeting, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and others called for the deployment of force in Niger to restore constitutional rule.

Thousands of Niger coup supporters took to the streets on Friday to protest against plans by West African nations to deploy a military force to the country, as a key regional meeting on a possible intervention was scrapped. The last-minute cancellation came as thousands of coup supporters rallied near a French military base in Niger on Friday. Niger’s new leaders have accused former colonial power France, a close Bazoum ally, of being behind the hardline ECOWAS stance against the coup. The coup leaders had threatened to assault him in the event of military intervention, the source added. The coup leaders have since named a new government, which met for the first time on Friday.

Nigerian army denies partnership with Asari-Dokubo’s security outfit.
The Nigerian army has denied any association with former Niger Delta militant leader Mujahid Asari-Dokubo and his security outfit. Asari-Dokubo had claimed on a podcast that his private military company was working with the government and the military in various states. However, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, clarified that the Nigerian military has never collaborated with Asari-Dokubo’s group in any operation or area mentioned.
