PHOTO: AA/FILEA searing heatwave continued to bake most parts of Pakistan as temperatures soared up to 51 degrees Celsius (about 124 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, meteorological officials and local media reported. The southern Sindh and northeastern Punjab provinces are predominantly bearing the brunt of the scorching heatwave, which, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), is likely to persist for at least another week. Jacobabad recorded 51 degrees Celsius -- the highest ever this year -- followed by Nawabshah, where the mercury touched 50.5 degrees. Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman last week warned that the country could face severe water shortages by 2025 due to climate change.

Pakistan on Sunday has reported the third polio case has as a one-year-old boy was found affected by the virus in North Waziristan. The sources of the health ministry confirmed the detection of the polio virus in the 12-month-old boy in Miranshah UC-3. Pakistan has reported three cases of polio in 2022 so far. Earlier, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates held a telephone conversation. He also appreciated Pakistan Army for supporting the national polio drive, ensuring proper reach and coverage.

Folk-rap group Kalush Orchestra performed an impressive rendition of their song Stefania in the grand final of Eurovision. The group was dressed in elaborate outfits, including long multi-coloured fringed ensembles, a pink bucket hat and others in traditional patterns. Formed in 2019, the group consists of founder and rapper Oleh Psiuk, multi-instrumentalist Ihor Didenchuk and dancer Vlad Kurochka. Norway’s Subwoolfer dressed in yellow wolf costumes while performing a synchronised dance number and singing Give That Wolf A Banana. Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan has reiterated that a conspiracy was being hatched to kill him, saying that his rivals were left with only option of assignation to get rid of him. Imran, without naming anyone, said they thought my government would fall during economic and Covid-19 pandemic crises but it overcame all challenges. Today’s rally is part of his party’s so called ‘real freedom’ movement against coalition government led by PML-N. On Saturday, he dropped a bombshell claiming an “assassination attempt” was being hatched against him – video evidence of which was kept in a “secure place”. While Pakistan’s history has been marred with political instability, no prime minister has ever been removed from office through a no-trust motion.

New Delhi has yet to officially inform Dhaka of the arrest of Prashanta Kumar Halder, also known as PK Halder, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said. PK Halder was a wanted criminal in Bangladesh, he said, adding that the government had issued “an arrest warrant against him through Interpol”. Also ReadTwo others arrested during the raids were identified as Pritish Kumar Halder and Pranesh Kumar Halder. However, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Saturday said the authorities in Bangladesh had yet to receive official confirmation of PK Halder’s arrest. PK Halder laundered about Tk80 crore to Canada and amassed about Tk426 crore beyond his known sources of income.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the demise of former Finance Minister and language veteran Abul Maal Abdul Muhith. In her condolence message, the PM said that despite being a member of the Civil Service of Pakistan, Muhith joined the first government of Bangladesh in 1971. At that time, he was posted in the Pakistan Embassy in the US. "A successful economist and politician, this Independent Award winner will be remembered by all for his works," Hasina said. ISLAMABAD – Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will reveal his plan, formulated in the PML-N’s meetings in London, upon his return to the country from the United Arab Emirates. Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday, the information minister said that PM Shehbaz will reveal his plan in an address to the nation soon. “He will very soon tell the nation about the entire strategy and announcements,” the information minister said. She said the prime minister would consult his allied political parties on the strategy before making his address to the nation. The prime minister, along with a host of senior PML-N leaders, visited London recently to meet and consult with his elder brother Nawaz.

After losing power, PTI chief Imran Khan has become highly dangerous, as he had himself predicted. While speaking at the PTI’s Mardan rally he warned the government to announce polls failing which a sea of people will wash away everything. They were in fact a part of the conspiracy to derail Pakistan on the economic and democratic front. The multi-million march proposed towards the end of the month is likely to turn into a sit-in that will continue till the government announces a timeframe for elections acceptable to Mr Khan. To avert this, the PTI will have to reach a prior agreement with the government before the big march is allowed.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said today (Saturday) was the hottest day of the year in Karachi with the temperature exceeding 42.8°C. According to the Met department, the humidity in the metropolis was 32%. PMD Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said that the temperature today was 7 degrees higher than the average of May. Sarfaraz said that the average temperature in May was 35.8°C. The chief meteorologist said that the temperature in Karachi is likely to drop by two to three degrees from tomorrow, adding that the temperature is expected to remain between 36 to 38°C.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to make some important announcements upon his return from London, where he will share the outcome of the strategy developed by top PML-N minds during consultations with party supremo Nawaz Sharif, the information minister said on Saturday. “He will very soon tell the nation about the entire strategy and decisions made in London,” the information minister said. When asked about the possibility of early elections, she said the current setup was a coalition, so this decision would be made by allies. “But the focus is on devising a strategy to reduce the burden of inflation upon the masses and restore confidence in the economy,” she added. He said transgender persons are earning money with dignity by selling toys, jewellery and daily necessities. Nayab Ali, head of the organizations that works for transgender persons, said that decent employment can give transgender persons a respectable place in society. The government should take steps to increase the economic status of transgender persons and also protect their fundamental rights.
