Man, 74, hospitalized after failed escape from Kwai Chung elderly home
A 74-year-old man was hospitalized following his botched escape from an elderly home in Kwai Chung on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred at about 1.30 pm today as the elderly man climbed out of the window on the second floor of the elderly home located at Shing Hei House in Kwai Shing East Estate. However, he suspectedly lacked the strength to support himself and fell onto an air conditioner on the first floor and got stuck between the exterior wall and the air conditioner. Firefighters soon came to rescue the old man who sustained fractures to his thighs and injured his forehead. He was then sent to Princess Margaret Hospital in a conscious state.

PH co-ed slow-pitch softball team bags silver, World Cup berth
The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Philippine team bagged the silver medal after bowing to unbeaten Chinese-Taipei, 8-2, in the championship match of the Co-ed Slow-Pitch Softball Asia Cup on Saturday, May 27, in Pattaya, Thailand. Three World Cup slots are at stake in the tournament and the Philippines, by virtue of finishing second, is assured of one. "We are so proud of their accomplishment," said Jean Henri Lhuillier, president of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil). We shall continue to support them until and beyond the World Cup." National coach Ana Maria Santiago, meanwhile, said the team needs to work harder for the World Cup which will take place later this year.

New PNR chairman named
New PNR chairman namedMANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has named a corporate executive as chairman of the Philippine National Railways (PNR), the state-run firm that operates the most extensive intra-island railway in Luzon. Michael Ted Macapagal was appointed to the post on April 28, according to the PNR website. The PNR said Macapagal is a member of the board of directors of the Philippine National Oil Co. and a former director of the Clark Board and Gulf Oil Philippines. He used to be a corporate executive based in San Francisco, California and is the first Filipino to have managed a major title insurance company in the United States, the PNR added. He and PNR general manager Jeremy Region will implement the construction of the 35-station North-South Commuter Railway Project that will link Clark, Pampanga and Calamba City, Laguna.

800 cops ready to assist in search and rescue ops for ‘Mawar’ — NCRPO
MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Friday said it will tap over 800 police officers to assist in the search and rescue operations as Super Typhoon Mawar approaches. Okubo said the NCRPO has also prepared food packs, medicine and water to be distributed to evacuees. Mexican officials find 175 migrants in truck near southern border
MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities found 175 migrants, mostly from Guatemala, crowded into a truck trailer in the southern state of Chiapas, the National Migration Institute (INM) said Friday, in the latest mass human smuggling incident to be detected in the country. ADVERTISEMENTAlthough the driver refused to open the truck’s back door, the faces of migrants could be seen through vents in the compartment, INM said. Most of the migrants were from Guatemala, with others from Ecuador, El Salvador, and Honduras. Woman killed by fire at Sha Tin home after couch accidentally set ablaze
A 43-year-old woman was found dead when firefighters were called to her home in Shui Chuen O Estate in Sha Tin, where a fire broke out on Friday morning. The woman named Tsang was certified dead on the spot when firefighters broke into the flat and put out the fire. The building needed not to be evacuated, and firefighters later mobilized the Fire Investigation Dog Team to aid the investigation. It was understood that Tsang was smoking at home at the time, and she accidentally set the couch ablaze. Tsang suspectedly passed out after inhaling the smoke and couldn’t make her escape in time, leading to her unfortunate death.

Cheung Chau Bun Festival returns as children enjoy cosplay during Piu Sik parade

The Celtics will be trying to take one more step toward becoming the first NBA team to rally from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven playoff series. House passes 31 of 42 priority bills
(UPDATE) THE House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading 31 of the administration's 42 priority measures. "We are proud of our collective accomplishment — 31 out of 42 and counting. The latest to be approved by the House on third and final reading were the 30-year national infrastructure program bill and the proposed national land use law. For approval on second reading are the following: natural gas industry enabling law, National Employment Action Plan, and the Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System bill. Three of the 42 measures were for committee discussion: budget modernization; a National Defense Act; and unified system of separation, retirement and pension for uniformed personnel.

China Eastern set to operate C919's first commercial flight on Sunday
China Eastern Airlines, the initial customer for the country's homegrown narrow-body jet C919, will launch the plane's first commercial flight on Sunday, the carrier's app showed on Friday. The C919 flight will take off as flight number MU9191 at 10:45 a.m. Beijing time (0245 GMT) from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and arrive in Beijing Capital Airport at 1:10 p.m. On Tuesday, the Shanghai Stamp Collecting Corporation said a promotional stamp would commemorate the first flight of C919 on Sunday. China Eastern signed a contract for five C919s in March 2021 in the first commercial deal for the plane. China's Xinhua state news agency had said last year that the C919 would make its first commercial flight in the spring.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesman Col. Medel Aguilar said spadework on at least seven of the 14 projects is seen to commence this year. The projects for the first EDCA sites cost $81.95 million. The cost of completing the 14 projects at the four new sites would still have to be determined.
