Black trans people account for a disproportionate amount of those murdered in Brazil — 80 percent in 2018, according to another rights group, Antra. (UPDATE) BEIJING will "not hesitate to start a war" if Taiwan declares independence, China's defense minister warned his US counterpart Friday, the latest salvo between the superpowers over the island. Wei warned Austin that "if anyone dares to split Taiwan from China, the Chinese army will definitely not hesitate to start a war no matter the cost," defense ministry spokesman Wu Qian quoted the minister as saying during the meeting. The Chinese minister vowed that Beijing would "smash to smithereens any 'Taiwan independence' plot and resolutely uphold the unification of the motherland," according to the Chinese defense ministry. As well as on Taiwan, China and the United States have been locked in a range of other disputes. China has called for talks to end the war, but has stopped short of condemning Russia's actions and has repeatedly criticized American arms donations to Ukraine.

(UPDATE) BOSTON: Stephen Curry produced a dazzling 43-point display as the Golden State Warriors battled past the Boston Celtics 107-97 to level the NBA Finals series at 2-2 on Friday (Saturday in Manila). Curry had entered game four with concerns swirling over his health after suffering a knock to his foot in the Warriors' game three defeat on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila). But the 34-year-old two-time NBA Most Valuable Player emphatically laid to rest any doubts about his fitness as he single-handedly hauled Golden State back into the finals with game five back in San Francisco on Monday (Tuesday, June 14, in Manila). But to win on the road and get home court advantage back, is big for this group. Green again struggled on offense with only two points but finished with nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

It was not the first time Abe provoked over the Taiwan question, and he previously said that "any emergency over Taiwan would mean an emergency for Tokyo." Japan seeks to acquire more "bargaining chips" not only on diplomacy but also on defense for containing China or Russia. If an Asian NATO comes into being, there will never be peace in Asia. The Chinese envoy urged Japan not to cross the red line on the Taiwan question, warning a "destructive impact" on bilateral ties if the situation is not handled properly. "They are either hyping issues related to the Taiwan question or the South China Sea, or even the Ukraine crisis.

PATNA, India: Indian police shot dead two protesters and arrested more than 130 others during street rallies sparked by a ruling party official's remarks about the Prophet Muhammad, authorities told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Saturday. In India and neighboring countries, Muslims took to the streets in huge numbers after Friday prayers to condemn the remarks, with police firing on a crowd in the eastern Indian city of Ranchi. Police in Uttar Pradesh fired tear gas to disperse at least one rally after several demonstrations were staged across the northern Indian state. The world now faces its most serious food crisis for many decades. The new global food crisis affects us all. However, it is the roughly 1 percent of the world's population who faced acute hunger even before the Ukraine crisis, those who cannot survive at all without help from aid agencies, who will be the victims if today's food crisis is allowed to deteriorate into multiple simultaneous famines. Second, because it seems unlikely that the underlying causes of this year's crisis will be solved quickly, reducing medium-term reliance on Russia and Ukraine is now a practical necessity. Mark Lowcock was UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator from May 2017 until June 2021.

(File)The Philippines has lodged a new diplomatic protest against China's maritime activities within Manila's 200-mile exclusive economic zone, the foreign ministry said late on Friday. It was the second diplomatic protest by the ministry this week, adding to more than 300 complaints filed against Beijing's "illegal" activities in the South China Sea. "China has no right to fish, monitor, or interfere with the Philippines' legitimate activities therein," it added. In November, the Philippines aborted a supply mission in the atoll after three Chinese coast guard vessels blocked and used water cannon on resupply boats. China claims large swathes of the South China Sea and continues to assert its presence in the strategic waterway, despite an arbitration ruling in 2016 invalidating Beijing's claim.

BANGKOK — Thailand legalized the growing of marijuana and its consumption in food and drinks on Thursday, the first Asian country to do so, with the aim of boosting its agriculture and tourism sectors but smoking pot is still against the law. ADVERTISEMENTAmong those at the front of the queue at one Bangkok shop was Rittipong Dachkul, 24, waiting since Wednesday evening to buy his first ever legal marijuana. Thailand, which has a tradition of using cannabis to relieve pain and fatigue, legalized medicinal marijuana in 2018. “After COVID, the economy going down the drain, we really do need this,” said Chokwan Kitty Chopaka, who owns a shop selling cannabis gum sweets. But authorities aim to head off an explosion of recreational use by limiting the strength of the products on offer.
