Unlike the typical modifying phrase, however, this absolute phrase modifies neither the noun "honeybees" nor the verb "died" in the main clause. Instead, it modifies the whole main clause, "the honeybees simply died," to give context to that idea. And, in some cases, the absolute phrase drops even the participle itself and just implies its presence: "Their pollen sources [being] no longer there, the honeybees simply died." In sum, absolute phrases are subtler and smoother combiners of ideas than all the other types of modifying phrases. As shown in many studies, face masks are 85 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 transmission. This infection protection beats most vaccines, though unlike jabs, masks do not protect against severe illness if one gets Covid. The reason is simple and clear: only now in a long, long time are two fearsomely armed superpowers face to face in Asia. In anticipation of US force deployment in the Philippines, China built bases on reclaimed islands in the South China Sea, which have been even more militarized as the confrontation with America has intensified. But the Philippines is the only country in Southeast Asia that might realistically host such assets.

New York Yankees pitcher Jameson Taillon throws to a Minnesota Twins batter during the first inning of a baseball game on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 (June 8 in Manila), in Minneapolis. AP PHOTOMINNEAPOLIS: The starting pitching has been so dominant for the New York Yankees this year, it has almost overshadowed another potent offense that leads the major leagues in home runs. Rizzo hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to crack open a close game for the Yankees, who brushed off a rare rough start by Jameson Taillon to beat the Minnesota Twins 10-4 on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) for their seventh straight victory. The Yankees have only lost once when that happens, in the Field of Dreams game in Iowa last August 12. That's actually a lower winning percentage than the astounding 110-38 record the Yankees have built, including the playoffs, against the Twins since 2002.
