Police launch anti-terrorism hotline
The police force has launched a hotline for the city’s residents to inform anonymously on anyone they suspected to be involved in terrorist activities or to report violence-related crimes. The new hotline - Counter-terrorism Reporting Hotline 63-666-999 will replace the existing Anti-violence Hotline, which was established in the midst of the 2019 social unrest. “Apart from violent acts, the public may also report suspected terrorism-related activities around them, in particular extremist plots, via this upgraded hotline,” the police said in a statement published on Tuesday. “Reporting such acts without delay will prevent and combat extremist activities more effectively. The public will also be able to protect themselves, their relatives and friends.”The statement also noted that the force is planning to pay rewards to those who provide reliable terrorism-related information.

Medical group pushes Herbosa as DoH chief
THE Philippine Medical Association (PMA) endorsed Dr. Teodoro "Ted" Herbosa, the special adviser of the National Task Force Against Covid-19 (NTF), as the next Department of Health (DoH) secretary. Herbosa received the PMA Presidential Award in recognition of his role in the group's undertakings, Atienza said. "Joey" Concepcion 3rd endorsed Herbosa and Dr. Edsel Salvaña for the post to be vacated by Secretary Francisco Duque 3rd. Herbosa was the executive vice president of the University of the Philippines System from 2017-2021. Atienza and Calimag said the PMA's past presidents, Jose Santiago Jr., Rey Melchor Santos, Jose Asa Sabili and Bu Castro, are also endorsing Herbosa.

Application for second batch of Local Tours program begins Wednesday
The second batch of 107 Local Tours programs under the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s “Hong Kong Summer Treats” campaign will be up for grabs starting Wednesday (June 8). 'Be very careful' about raising taxes – ADB exec
ASIAN governments should be "very careful" about raising taxes given growth uncertainties, a senior Asian Development Bank (ADB) economist said on Monday. "So, I do think Asian governments do need to be very careful about mobilizing more taxes, or to put it bluntly raising taxes in this kind of uncertain and fragile growth environment," he added. As Asian economies recover, tax revenue mobilization has to be a "balanced effort," Park said. The ADB expects developing Asia to grow by 5.2 percent this year and 5.3 percent in 2023. Growth risks tagged by the Manila-based multilateral include the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the US Federal Reserve's aggressive tightening, continued pandemic risks and an economic slowdown in China.

Ombudsman suspends ARTA chief, 4 other execs

Aside from Belgica, also placed under a six-month suspension by Ombudsman Samuel Martires last May 24 were ARTA Deputy Director General Eduardo Bringas, Division Chief Sheryl Pura-Sumagui, Director Jedreck Ng and Director Melamy Salvadora-Asperin. What complicated the case is that the frequencies ARTA ordered assigned to NOW had already been allocated to DITO Telecommunity Inc., which has been selected as the third telecom provider. A copy of the suspension order has been sent to the office of Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea for its immediate implementation.

Govt holds off fines and penalties in first six months of new waste-charging scheme
The city’s environmental chief said reminders and warnings will be issued to those who violated the waste charging scheme during the six-month phasing-in period following the enactment of the law. The bill will require residents to pay for bags in which to dump their waste. The charge is 11 cents a liter, meaning the price of a 10-liter bag will be HK$1.10. He noted that some property management companies have raised concerns about possible conflicts with residents over the new waste-charging scheme, and the difficulties in identifying violators of it. The government will also hand out free bags to the public so they can adapt to the mechanism, Wong added.

Supermoon – first of two – will shine June 14
The first of two consecutive supermoons launching in 2022 will light the sky on June 14. A supermoon is a full moon that appears slightly bigger and brighter than normal, although the difference between a supermoon and a normal full moon can be imperceptible without a side-by-side picture comparison. The last supermoon to light up the night sky rose in May last year. June's full moon is also known as the Strawberry Moon, leading some to refer to the upcoming event as a Super Strawberry Moon. Whereas the second supermoon - also the final and the largest of the year - will glow on July 14 at 2.38am.

Man involved in Mandaluyong hit-and-run identified
THE Mandaluyong City Police has identified and is hunting down the man involved in the hit-and-run incident that severely injured a security guard on Sunday. Mandaluyong City Police Chief Col. Gauvin Yamashita Unos identified the victim as Christian Floralde. A video that went viral showed Floralde stopping the vehicle but the driver rammed him and rolled over his body. This is a step in the LTO administrative proceeding to determine whether or not the suspect driver is still fit to be issued a Philippine driver's license. We are also coordinating and assisting the Mandaluyong PNP in their task in the filing of a criminal case," LTO National Capital Region Chief Clarence Guinto said.

Masks and bottled water were the immediate needs that were identified, Robredo said.
