BBM vows 'high accountability' for rights abuses
(UPDATE) PRESIDENT-ELECT Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has promised a "high level of accountability" for human rights violations in the country during his watch. Gonzales said during a press briefing after the meeting that they talked at length about the Human Rights Council Resolution 4533 of 2020. "It means the UN and the government needs to work together in addressing some concerns on human rights and he's very much interested, for example, in ensuring a consultation for the nomination of the new Commission of Human Rights," he said. "This is the topic that he immediately raised and he mentioned also the importance of ensuring high-level of accountability in terms of human rights [violations]...," he said. Human rights organizations say they have proof that many of the deaths were extrajudicial killings.

(Video) Shooting in Central district sees three injured
Four people have been arrested after a shooting in Central in the early hours of Friday leaving three injured. Police said they received a report about the shooting near Tung Yiu Commercial Building on Wyndham Street at around 2.41am. The force’s anti-terror unit responded to the incident, suspecting the case to be related to organized crime. They begin to attack an adjacent white car that had stopped by the traffic light. Violent crime is very rare in Hong Kong, though organized crime gangs are known to operate in the city.

Styrofoam-munching superworms could hold key to plastic upcycling
Scientists at Australia’s University of Queensland have now discovered that superworms — the larvae of Zophobas morio darkling beetles — are eager to dine on the substance, and their gut enzymes could hold the key to higher recycling rates. Rinke and his team fed superworms different diets over a three week period, with some given polystyrene foam, commonly known as styrofoam, some bran, and others not fed at all. Next, the team used a technique called metagenomics to analyze the microbial gut community and find which gene-encoded enzymes were involved in degrading the plastic. The plans included the common tower policy, regulations for in-building solutions, fiber permitting and spectrum management. She believes the common tower policy will encourage telcos and internet service providers to share cell towers. The DICT issued the Common Tower Policy in June 2020. Govt revokes top award from pro-democracy figures
Veteran pro-democracy activists Yeung Sum, Sin Chung-kai, and former law scholar Benny Tai Yiu-ting have been stripped of their civic honors by the government, after the decision was published in the official Gazette on Friday. The Silver Bauhinia Medal and the Justices of Peace status granted to Yeung and Sin respectively were revoked. Meanwhile, former law scholar Benny Tai Yiu-ting has been stripped of his Medal of Honour - which was awarded in 2001 for his contributions to civic education. Separately, he has been sentenced to 10 months’ jail last month for illegally incurring election expenses through newspaper advertisements to promote a tactical voting scheme ahead of the 2016 Legislative Council poll. He had also served 16 months in jail in 2020 for his role in the Occupy Central movement, a civil disobedience movement for greater democracy.

One dead after fighter jet crashes into homes in central China
One person has died and two more injured when a fighter jet crashed in central China on Thursday, state media reported. The plane, an Air Force J-7, "had an accident during training and fell in the vicinity of an airport... causing damage to private homes", according to state broadcaster CCTV. The pilot parachuted to safety and has been transferred to hospital along with the other injured, CCTV said. Two pilots died when a navy plane crashed in 2019 in the island province of Hainan. China's civil aviation authority did not immediately find any reason for the incident, and have said an investigation is ongoing.

PH cannot afford to reject RCEP

That measure is the ratification of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which went into effect on January 1. Without participation in the RCEP, the Philippines will almost certainly fall behind many of its regional peers in trade and investment. The only one that fits that definition as of now is the ratification of the RCEP.

Body of missing woman swept away by flash floods in Tai Po found
Rescuers believed they have found the body of a 52-year-old woman who was swept away by flash floods while hiking along Wang Chung Stream in Pat Sin Leng Country Park, off Bride’s Pool Road in Tai Po. It is understood the woman’s body was found at around 9am this morning, and will be airlifted by Government Flying Service helicopters for further inspections. Police, firemen and Government Flying Service helicopters were deployed as Fire Services Department divers scoured the gully's lower stream. The woman, who has a son and a daughter, works in a hardware company as a clerk, according to sources. The accident happened nearly two hours after the observatory issued the second red rainstorm warning signal of the year at 10.45am.
