Kapag ako pinagpala na maglingkod, hinding hindi ko kayo ipapahiya. Hinding hindi ko kayo bibiguin!" The tandem held a proclamation rally in Imus Grandstand on Febrary 8, the first day of the campaign period for candidates in the national polls. In the national interest, the presidential hopefuls need to mutually call a total ceasefire to the utterly destructive misinformation and disinformation war being waged for them by their social media troll armies. Two such web pages of the troll commanders and lieutenants flaunt photo-and-illustration libraries with hundreds or so ready-to-use derogatory and combative material. So with this state of affairs in the major social media platforms, what can we expect the next three months of the presidential campaign to be like? The parties of the three other presidential candidates — they don't have the resources to get themselves directly embroiled in the five-cornered fight — can at best hope for whatever electoral advantage they could gain from the damage the two leading presidential candidates would be inflicting on each other. This disturbing prospect has prompted me to seriously reconsider my original goal of encouraging the major participants in the presidential campaign to do more truthful, rational, and responsible social media posts.

"The heart of education is the education of the heart." For us in education, we could turn to the Dalai Lama who wrote "The heart of education is the education of the heart." We could likewise turn to Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher who said, "Educating your mind without educating your heart is no education at all" and to Charlie Chaplain, a balance of heart and mind in his saying "We think too much and feel too little." To them, educating the mind and heart embraces all the qualities that make us human and ultimately gives us meaning in our lives. "Educating the heart imparts moral values birthing integrity, virtue and character.

(Note: A Standard reporter received a mandatory testing notice on Wed. It’s easier to get the mandatory testing jackpot than winning the Mark Six. Just last Friday, I was discussing the growing possibility of being subjected to a mandatory test with my friend in Sha Tin. It’s the one thing I was thankful for after completing the mandatory test after two hours — a helpful staffer and a smile, not scorn. It would have been helpful if the government has a centralized page offering information about queuing time at different testing centers.

The next president will inherit significant economic reformsSignificant economic reforms that Rodrigo Duterte’s administration achieved during his term will stand to benefit the country’s next president if the latter understands the good fortune brought in his/her way, and does not negate the intent of the reforms by contrary actions. Quicker decision-making that involved the infrastructure and social programs undertaken by the government was matched by the accomplishments in economic reform legislation. (2) Investment incentives reforms. The economic reforms were not easy. The other economic reforms will find major implementation of their provisions only as the next president of the country reaps the benefits that can come from them.
