1 Nelly Korda notched four birdies in a three-under par 69 on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) to maintain her one-shot lead in the US Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour's Tournament of Champions (ToC) in Florida. Korda won four LPGA titles last year, including her first major at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, and also won Olympic gold. She steered a steady course in chilly, windy weather that had the course playing some two shots tougher than it did on Friday. "Oh, my gosh, so much tougher," said Korda, who finished the round bundled up in a puffer coat. "I mean, you put the cold weather in and a bit of wind makes it a lot tougher — especially with all these layers on."

WOOING THE WEST Taliban representatives arrive in Gardermoen, Norway on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022 (January 23 in Manila), for talks with western representatives on human rights and emergency aid. No country has yet recognized the Taliban government and Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt stressed that the talks would "not represent a legitimization or recognition of the Taliban." A former UN representative to Afghanistan, Kai Eide, told AFP: "We can't keep distributing aid circumventing the Taliban." She told AFP she feared the talks would "normalize the Taliban and... strengthen them, while there is no way that they'll change." "Hosting a senior member of the Taliban casts doubt on Norway's global image as a country that cares for women's rights, when the Taliban has effectively instituted gender apartheid," he said.

Moreno admits to keeping P50 million in excess campaign funds in 2016Presidential aspirant Manila Mayor Francisco Isko Domagoso delivered a message to the supporters during the visit at Quezon City Memorial circle on October 29, 2021. MANILA, Philippines — Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno admitted to keeping some P50.8 million in leftover campaign funds from his failed Senate run in 2016, asserting that there should be no problem since these were campaign contributions from various donors. "I had to pay taxes since there was leftover from the campaign because that was pooled money from different people. In 2007, his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth or SALN reflected a net worth of some P7.5 million. This means that it is possible for candidates to pocket the millions in leftover funds without violating election or tax laws.

BEIJING: The "curse" of Olympic overspending looks set to strike again at the Beijing Games, with stringent Covid measures and loss of ticket sale revenues pushing up costs for China. Budget was a key part of China being awarded the Games, with Beijing winning the bid over only one other contender as other cities backed out over high costs. Beijing Olympics communications manager Zhao Weidong recently admitted to reporters that the pandemic might mean a need to "increase some expenses." In 2015, Beijing said it was counting on a budget of just over $3 billion, which included the costs of organizing and building sports facilities. The cost of hosting the Olympics usually doubles between the award date and the opening ceremony, experts say.

Merging works, mastering wordsThese two books could have joined the list of must-have titles I wrote up at yearend, but deliveries were delayed. Intriguingly, some works… were written from the point of view of policemen. These are grouped under five interlocking themes: Mind, Imagination; Language, Poetry; Self, Love, Family; Country, People, Martial Law; God and Death. Filipino writers’ works are wrought from and not written in English, Abad has always contended. / No one comes from language, / the truth is what words dream.
