The Social Security System (SSS) on Thursday assured members infected with COVID-19, particularly those who just stayed at home instead of a medical facility, that they can avail themselves of sickness benefits. “For employed members, they should have used all their current company sick leave with pay and notified their employer about their sickness. Self-employed, voluntary, and OFW-members and those separated from employment must notify the SSS directly by filing a sickness benefit application,” it added. The SSS allows online filing of sickness benefit reimbursement applications via the My.SSS portal. Members can avail themselves of a maximum of 120 days’ worth of sickness benefit during one calendar year.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged local government units (LGUs) in other parts of the country to copy what the National Capital Region (NCR) did and also implement policies to restrict the movement of unvaccinated persons. Presbitero Velasco Jr. said local chief executives instructed their city and municipal councils to impose restrictions on their unvaccinated constituents. “What the local chief executives should also really pursue is to properly explain the benefits of being vaccinated,” he said. 11525, or the COVID-19 Vaccination Program Act, states that vaccination shall not be considered as an additional mandatory requirement for educational or employment purposes or conducting transactions with government. He also defended the power of local governments to impose local laws to restrict the movement and access to services of unvaccinated citizens, as local governments in general may assert that it is part of their duty to protect the health of their constituents.

A crunch is about to become a strictly pleasant noise when McDonald's hands out HK$1,000-loaded red packets to more than 10,000 contract workers for the Year of the Tiger. Well, say fast-food bosses, the food and beverage sector may well be taking a hard hit due to the Covid eatery restrictions, but McDonald's crispy thighs have been selling so well that the laisee gesture is the order the day. Randy Lai Wai-sze, managing director of McDonald's (Hong Kong), says the chain has sold over 28 million crispy thighs in the past year, though orders for the deep-fried crunchy thighs have been running extra hot since October when boy band Mirror was hired to join in promotions. There's also good news for managers of McDonald's outlets. They're in for an immediate pay rise, though previously they would have had to wait until April for salary adjustments.

Fan favorites Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff join the cast of the newest ‘Matrix’ movie. The number one draw for seeing "The Matrix: Resurrections" is, of course, seeing Keanu Reeves return to the role of Neo after almost 20 years. Meanwhile, my favorite Jonathan Groff moment is his performance as King George singing "You'll Be Back" in the hit musical "Hamilton." He has said time and again that getting to fight Keanu Reeves is "like flying." Stahelski directed all the "John Wick" movies and was actually Keanu Reeves' stunt double for the other three "Matrix" movies.
