Steven Yiu shows how the queueing ticket system works. SING TAO Previous NextAs the typhoon season approaches, the Airport Authority is implementing a queuing ticket system for taxis to assist locals and visitors who are unable to leave the airport during severe weather, says executive director Steven Yiu Siu-chung. "Buses stop operating under Typhoon Signal No 8, while the MTR suspends service under Typhoon Signal No 9, effectively cutting off all airport transportation," Yiu said. The queuing ticket system has already undergone testing and will be activated during Typhoon Signal No 8 or 9, heavy rain, or taxi shortages. Yiu emphasized this is to discourage taxi use during the highest typhoon signals, as no taxis will be in service then.

Twelve people, including nine professional football players, were arrested by ICAC for allegedly offering and accepting bribes for match-fixing in the local Premier League and also the Second Division. It is alleged that the coaches gave secret signals to the football players to manipulate the match results - such as the number of goals or corner kicks, the match scores, etc - while placing bets through their associates and profiting from illegal gambling. It was learned that the illegal bets placed by individual arrestees in one season amounted to over HK$1 million. Over 20 premises and residences of the arrestees were raided, while more than 20 individuals including several football players were also interviewed during the investigation. It also reviews corruption-prone areas of the Football Association to further enhance the integrity management and corruption prevention capabilities of the football sector.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. looks on as he meets with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, at Malacanang Palace in Manila, Philippines, March 19, 2024. REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein/Pool/File PhotoPhilippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said on Wednesday new rules outlined by China's coast guard that could result in the detention of foreigners in the South China Sea were an escalation and "worrisome". China routinely accuses vessels of trespassing in areas of the South China Sea that fall inside the exclusive economic zones of its neighbors and has clashed repeatedly with the Philippines in the past year. The Philippines "will use any point of contact with China to stop aggressive actions" and allow Filipino fishermen to fish in the South China Sea, Marcos said. Beijing claims jurisdiction over most of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion in annual ship-borne trade.
