Sri Lanka expects to vaccinate 13 million of its population against COVID-19 by the end of September, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in a televised address to the nation on Friday (June 25). Thereby, 4 million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine and 2.5 million of Sinovac vaccine are expected to arrive in July. Meanwhile, plans are afoot to obtain 2 million more shots of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine, the President said further. In addition, Sri Lanka will be receiving 5 million Sinopharm shots and another 2 million Sputnik V jabs in August. Upon receiving, 3 million more Sinopharm vaccines in September, Sri Lanka will be able to inoculate 13 million people by the end of September this year, he went on to say.

The Ministry of Health says 1,239 more persons were tested positive for the novel coronavirus today (June 25). All new cases have been associated with the New Year COVID-19 cluster. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases confirmed in the country thus far to 249,289. As per statistics, 31,807 virus-infected people are currently being treated at designated hospitals and treatment centres across the island. Meanwhile, the recoveries count climbed to 214,668 today as 1,843 patients who were under medical care for novel coronavirus had returned to health.

Iceland will be the first country in Europe to lift all its Covid-19 restrictions as it is set to scrap face masks and social distancing, the country's health minister said today. The North Atlantic country will lift all its domestic restrictions on Saturday in accordance with recommendations made by Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason. Iceland's current Covid restrictions, which include a 300-person gathering limit, mandatory mask use for selected activities and a one-metre distancing rule, will all be lifted from midnight. All COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted in Iceland on Saturday, the country's health minister said. The Committee on High Posts has approved the appointments of two ambassadors, three ministerial secretaries and a chairman of a state institution, the Department of Communications of the Parliament said in a statement issued today. The ongoing cleanup efforts of the Tissamaharama Wewa which is a Joint Venture between a Sri Lankan and Chinese company has been halted, the Department of Archaeology confirmed to The Morning today (25). According to Prof. Anura Manatunga, Director General of the Department of Archaeology, prior permission was not obtained from the Department before the cleanup efforts began. “We have informed the relevant parties to halt ongoing work and seek permission from the Archaeology Department to proceed,” he told The Morning. He stated that the cleanup of the Tissamaharama Wewa will be allowed to proceed only after the relevant procedures are followed. Earlier, the alleged presence of what appeared to be personnel attached to China’s People’s Liberation Army at the launch of a Chinese Joint Venture to dredge the Tissamaharama Wewa was reported.

INS Sarvekshak, a Survey Ship of Indian Navy arrived in Colombo for Survey Assistance yesterday (24), the Indian High Commission said today (25). The ship, equipped with the state of the art survey equipment including the Side Scan Sonar, would assist in the Survey efforts being undertaken in vicinity of the ill fated MV X-Press Pearl and off Colombo. INS Sarvekshak was deployed upon a formal request from the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure safety of navigation in area outside the Colombo harbour. The joint survey operations would have the coordinated participation of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), Sri Lanka Navy and Indian Navy.
