May 10, 2021, Colombo: SriLankan Cares, the CSR arm of SriLankan Airlines, fulfilling an acute need of the hour due to the prevailing pandemic, donated a batch of ventilators to the National Hospital, Colombo, recently. When the country witnesses a surge in the numbers of COVID-19 patients, as the main and final referral center of the island, the National Hospital is faced with the challenge of having sufficient resources in place to provide medical care for incoming patients. SriLankan Cares, as a tribute to the yeomen service rendered by the country’s health sector in combating the current pandemic, extended its support in this manner. The donation was funded purely through the contribution of SriLankan Airlines’ staff members, who joined hands to help fulfill a national endeavor despite the turbulent times faced by the Airline and challenges and hardships stemming from the compulsory salary reductions owing to the current circumstances. Even during the pandemic, SriLankan Cares continues to extend its helping hand to the needy and the less privileged sectors of society and some of its recent projects were, the donation of essential items to the CCC Interim Home, Maharagama and fund-raising collaboration with the Little Hearts Project.

Athletes have long perpetuated the theory that sex before competition zaps energy. In fact, some studies suggest that pre-sports sex may actually aid athletes by raising their testosterone levels, for example. It is unclear, however, what psychological effects sex may have on an athlete’s performance. “After three months without sex, which is not so uncommon for some athletes, testosterone dramatically drops to levels close to children’s levels,” he said. “For other athletes a bit of extra aggression could be the difference” between winning and losing, Jannini said.

A Covid-19 variant spreading in India is more contagious and it is feared it could be dodging some vaccine protections, contributing to the country’s explosive outbreak, the World Health Organization’s chief scientist said. In an interview with AFP, Soumya Swaminathan warned that “the epidemiological features that we see in India today do indicate that it’s an extremely rapidly spreading variant”. Swaminathan, an Indian paediatrician and clinical scientist, said the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19, which was first detected in India last October, was clearly a contributing factor to the catastrophe unfolding in her homeland. “There have been many accelerators that are fed into this,” the 62-year-old said, stressing that “a more rapidly spreading virus is one of them”. The WHO recently listed B.1.617 — which counts several sub-lineages with slightly different mutations and characteristics — as a “variant of interest”.
