This brings the total number of coronavirus recoveries in the country to 106,641. Sri Lanka has reported 128,530 positive cases of COVID-19 following the outbreak of the virus infection. However, up to 21,062 virus-infected patients are currently receiving treatment at designated hospitals and treatment centres. Sri Lanka’s pandemic death toll meanwhile stands at 827.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has inquired about the condition of former Maldivian President and current Speaker Mohamed Nasheed who is receiving treatment in an Intensive Care Unit after being seriously injured in a bomb attack. The Prime Minister made a telephone call to Mohamed Nasheed’s father on Tuesday (11), to inquire about the Former President’s health condition, said the Prime Minister’s Office. The Prime Minister wished Nasheed a speedy recovery and requested that he be informed if Nasheed requires any help in his recovery. Nasheed, the president of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party and the current parliament speaker, was critically injured after a bomb exploded as he left his family home in the capital Malé on the 06th of May.

Sri Lanka Railways has decided to suspend interprovincial services effective from midnight today (May 11). Accordingly, intra-provincial services will be provided for the commuters for time being, the railways department said further. In addition, interprovincial bus services provided by Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and private sector will also be suspended from tonight. Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama stated that an announcement regarding the use of buses for essential services will be made later. Meanwhile, the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to continue the provision of concessions for interprovincial bus transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Movement will be restricted without causing any inconvenience to the essential services, said Joint-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Gammanpila on Tuesday (11) clarifying the governments’ decision on imposing travel restrictions. “Essential Services, Export-oriented industries, agriculture, and fisheries industry will operate despite the travel restrictions being imposed,” he said adding the government is yet to decide in detail on the implementation of the restrictions. The travel restrictions are at the experimental stage at the moment, said the Joint Cabinet Spokesperson. However, in the most of the case the authorities are to consider the COVID numbers and decide on restrictions and essential services, rather than implementing a blanket policy for the entire country at once, said Gammanpila. The decision on travel restrictions was made by the Cabinet of Ministers and not by the Presidential Task Force for the Prevention of COVID-19, he said adding the President’s Spokesperson will explain in detail the implementation of the travel restrictions.

The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday (10) approved the resolution presented by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Finance to obtain a sum of USD 200 million to finance the Second Consolidated Highways Investment Programme, the Department of Government Information said today (11). The Government of Sri Lanka and the Asian Development Bank have entered into an agreement to obtain funds worth USD 900 million for the implementation of the Second Consolidated Highways Investment Programme. “Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution furnished by the Prime Minister as the Minister of Finance to obtain an amount of USD 200 million, which is the third installment of the agreed sum of USD 900 million promised for financing the Second Consolidated Highways Investment Programme and enter into the relevant agreement,” the cabinet decisions released on Tuesday (11) read. Under the Second Consolidated Highways Investment Programme, plans are in place to renovate and maintain 3,400 km of rural access roads in the Eastern, Northern, Uva, and Western provinces and to renovate 340 km of national roads between the rural community and the socio-economic centres in the aforementioned provinces. The entire programme is to be completed by 31st of March 2027.

In order to make a better society, the current government has focused on stopping the importation of narcotics, reducing the demand for narcotics and rehabilitating drug addicts. While various measures have already been taken to reduce the demand for narcotics and minimize the importation of drugs, the main focus of this discussion was on rehabilitating drug addicts without imprisonment, providing them with vocational training, and reconnecting them with society as effective citizens.
