Airline passengers or transit passengers from Sri Lanka will not be permitted to leave for Dubai, Kuwait, Italy, Maldives and Singapore until May 31, according to Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited. This was announced today by its Vice Chairman, Mr Rajeewasiri Sooriyaarachchi. The UAE has announced a suspension of entry for travellers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka with effect from Wednesday in a bid to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. After the UAE, Kuwait has also announced the suspension of flights to and from the four south Asian countries. The Maldives has also barred travellers from a number of South Asian countries including Sri Lanka in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak.

The Navy has arrested a man who had entered Sri Lanka illegally by sea from India. The Navy said that four more persons were arrested for providing facilities to the person concerned. The suspect had flown to India from Sri Lanka and was apprehended by the Navy while returning to Mannar in a small boat. The Navy said that two persons on board the vessel and two others involved in the racket were also arrested. The Navy said that the five suspects were handed over to the Public Health Inspectors for quarantine.

A consignment of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka within the next two weeks, says State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle. Thereby, Sri Lanka will be receiving 600,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccine. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka received the first batch of Sputnik V vaccine containing 15,000 doses purchased from Russia. She added that Sputnik V jabs must be administered within 2 hours after the product is removed from the freezer. Sri Lanka has rolled out the Sputnik V jabs among 11,334 people in Colombo, Gothatuwa and Kolonnawa MOH areas.

Namal Rajapaksa, Minister of Youth and Sports said that a digital identity card with new technology will be issued to the public in the next few days to make the Covid vaccination more efficient as a result of discussions with the Ministry of Health and the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) . The new digital identity card, which includes information on vaccinations, will provide each individual with the latest technology, including the date, place, time and type of vaccine issued by the government, as well as relevant information and the date, place and time of the second dose. The Vision of Prosperity policy clarifies a people-centered digital governance system that is being brought to the practical level for the first time and is expected to avoid the difficulties associated with vaccination through technology and the Internet through the new digital identity card that includes information on vaccination. Commenting on the new digital identity card issued for Covid vaccination, Minister Namal Rajapaksa said,“We must also introduce new technologies for the benefit of the people in the country to overcome the difficulties that come with the epidemic. The World Health Organization said Wednesday that a variant of Covid-19 behind the acceleration of India’s explosive outbreak has been found in dozens of countries all over the world. The UN health agency said the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19, first found in India in October, had been detected in more than 4,500 samples uploaded to an open-access database “from 44 countries in all six WHO regions”. “And WHO has received reports of detections from five additional countries,” it said in its weekly epidemiological update on the pandemic. Outside of India, it said that Britain had reported the largest number of Covid cases caused by the variant. Earlier this week, the WHO declared B.1.617 -- which counts three so-called sub-lineages with slightly different mutations and characteristics -- as a “variant of concern”.
