Athens – Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias died at the age of 92, the Greek state news agency ANA reports. Papolias had little power to shape policy, but the governments he came to power with: conservative, socialist, conservative socialist coalitions, and the left-wing Siriza in the last month of his term. He was also deeply involved in sports, participated in several athletics and became a Greek youth champion in the pole vault. Returning to Greece in 1974, Papolias was a founding member of the Panhelenic Socialist Movement and was elected to the Greek Parliament from 1977 to 2004. One of his few official trips abroad was to attend the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as a guest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
