Due to a large number of drunk driving accidents which have caused many fatalities in the city, the Karachi police will for the first time have breathalysers to discourage the practice of driving a vehicle after consuming alcohol. Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Saeed Arain confirmed that the tender for procurement has already been forwarded to the relevant department. Currently, policemen use conventional methods to determine whether the driver is under the influence of alcohol or not. Officials believe that increasing the number of challans and penalties against the drivers under influence of alcohol or drugs would discourage others and set deterrence against traffic rules violation. The officials said those found driving under the influence of alcohol will not only be fined but also arrested.
