Libya's ambassador to the United Nations, Taher El Sonni, said that the postponement of December 24 elections was not surprising and that the national unity government was and is still determined to hand over power when the new dates for elections are set. El Sonni explained at a Security Council session about Libya on Monday that the postponement of elections was expected because of opposing opinions among the Libyan parties and the legal and constitutional framework regulating the elections. El Sonni said consensus among all parties on the constitutional path and electoral laws remained very crucial, stressing the importance of providing the necessary capabilities for the success of elections with the support of the High National Elections Commission or state authorities. “I hail the steps taken toward unifying the Central Bank of Libya, considering that it contributes to correcting the state's financial policy. He also criticized holding Security Council sessions without changing the situation in Libya, saying: "The sessions repeat themselves and the situation in Libya stands unaltered."
