After 12 days of constantly being handcuffed to an officer or to the bed, Mr Slater was transferred to an intensive care unit where he died. Nasrul Ismail, an expert on health services within prisons, has strongly criticised the treatment of Mr Slater. Mr Slater was take to hospital again using the same method four days later, before being told he needed a lumbar puncture. On October 22 Mr Slater was released on home detention curfew and from the handcuffs, which had kept him restrained for the past 12 days. Mr Ismail has argued that the treatment Mr Slater received may have infringed his human rights.
