Possible Move Forward dissolution worries Thai senatorsThai senator Nantana NantavaropasA group of senators has voiced concerns about the potential dissolution of the main opposition Move Forward Party (MFP), saying Thailand’s democracy may take a step backwards. Sen Nantana Nantavaropas, a leading member of the so-called New Breed group, said on Monday that concern exists not only among the Thai public but also within the international community. According to Ms Nantana, their point of contention is that a public agency should not have the power to disband a political party and shape the country’s political landscape. Meanwhile, Democrat member Rachada Dhnadirek warned diplomats from 18 countries, who recently met with MFP members that their comments regarding the MFP dissolution case could be seen as interference in the country’s judicial process. She also said the Foreign Ministry should take action to protect the country’s judicial process.

The Thai publishing market is expected to decline this year as economic woes hit people's pockets, but booksellers see a promising opportunity by targeting niche markets, according to the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (Pubat). Nattakorn Vuttichaipornkul, vice-president of internal affairs at Pubat, said booksellers and publishers experienced a slight drop in sales in the first half of the year. "The sales of textbooks dropped as people turned to watching and learning from video platforms like YouTube," Mr Theerapat said. As a result of the increasing popularity of yaoi novels over the past five years, Pubat has started to see a growing demand for girls' love novels, he said. To date, the association has 485 members, which consist of publishers and booksellers, up from 288 members during the pandemic, Mr Theerapat said.

(Photo: Nutthawat Wichieanbut)Several political analysts predict the opposition Move Forward Party (MFP) will be dissolved when the Constitutional Court delivers its ruling on Wednesday. The party's best chance lies with written arguments made by Suraphol Nitikraipote, a professor of public law and one of the party's witnesses. He said the party's attempt to revise the lese majeste law through a legislative process is expected to take time. "The party is expected to follow the court's order but individual members may continue [to campaign for amendments to the lese majeste law]. Meanwhile, Mr Chaithawat said there were attempts to lure the party MPs by some government parties, but he remains confident in the MFP MPs.

Oil Fuel Fund Office studies changes that could make it easier to manage its debtsAn attendant refuels a car at a PTT petrol station in Khon Kaen. (Photo: Chakkrapan Natanri)The Oil Fuel Fund Office (Offo) is considering revising its price subsidy programmes to focus only on groups of people who badly need help, rather than making them universal. The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc, the country’s sole gas seller, has already adopted the targeted approach. It subsidises compressed natural gas prices only for taxi and public bus operators. The current diesel subsidy is 40 satang per litre, and the LPG subsidy is 4.18 baht per kilogramme, or 63 baht for a standard 15kg cylinder.
