Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Politicians always claim that their prime obligation is to defend our nation. However, as Max Hastings confirms (“It’s scary what we need to spend on defence”, Nov 23), they have singularly failed to provide both the personnel and equipment to achieve this. Our ability to defend our shores against a large-scale missile/drone attack is virtually nonexistent. So isn’t it time for our political leaders to rise above party politics and come together to urgently and collectively guarantee an increased defence budget, in time to meet the recommendations of the strategic defence review? And haven’t the service chiefs a duty to put their careers on the line, to the point of resignation, if our politicians fail to provide what they

Globally, an intimate partner or family member was responsible for the deaths of approximately 51,100 women and girls during 2023, an increase from an estimated 48,800 victims in 2022, UN Women and the U.N. Office of Drugs and Crime said. Africa also had the highest number of victims relative to the size of its population — 2.9 victims per 100,000 people. “Even though men and boys account for the vast majority of homicide victims, women and girls continue to be disproportionately affected by lethal violence in the private sphere," the report said.

Donald Trump will remove all transgender members of the US military from their posts, according to reports. It will lead to the dismissal of thousands of service personnel at a time when the US armed forces are struggling to meet recruitment targets. In his first term, Mr Trump banned transgender people from joining the US armed forces but those already in post were allowed to keep their jobs. Under the reported new proposals transgender people would also be banned from joining the military. The move comes after the president-elect nominated Fox News host Pete Hegseth, who has criticised “weak” and “effeminate” military leadership, as his defence secretary.

Read our privacy policyDonald Trump is expected to sign an executive order that would remove transgender service members from the military as soon as his first day in office. The president-elect is reportedly preparing to issue an order following his inauguration on January 20 that would effectively ban trans people serving in the military — and then medically discharge the thousands of currently serving trans service members in the armed forces. In his first term in office, Trump declared that the US would no longer “accept or allow” trans people in the military, citing “tremendous medical costs and disruption,” he tweeted in 2017. Now, Trump is expected to immediately rescind Biden’s order and go further by ejecting currently-serving trans troops, according to The Times, citing sources familiar with the president-elect’s plans. “These people will be forced out at a time when the military can’t recruit enough people,” a source familiar with Trump’s plans told The Times.

US President-elect Donald Trump is planning to discharge all service transgender members of the US military when he returns to the White House, according to reports. The Times reported that Trump will implement an executive order on his first day in office that would “medically discharge” around 15,000 active service members as unfit to serve, while also banning future transgender enlistments. The proposed move comes at a time when the US military is facing significant recruitment challenges, with most branches falling short of their targets. Rachel Branaman, executive director of the Modern Military Association of America, argued that such a ban would “undermine the readiness of the military” and deepen its recruitment crisis. US President Biden overturned the ban in 2021, but the new measure would reportedly lead to the discharge of all transgender personnel, regardless of their tenure.

Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q, downgraded its full-year guidance and said it anticipated a £31 million hit from higher employers’ national insurance contributions (NICs), prompting a 13 per cent fall in its shares. The DIY retailer narrowed its annual pre-tax profit expectations to between £510 and £540 million after worse than expected quarterly sales and warned of an “uncertain” outlook. Kingfisher had previously expected profits of between £510 and £550 million, below the £568 million in the 12 months to January 31. The group, which also owns Screwfix in the UK and Castorama and Brico Dépôt in France, said the increase in employers’ NICs announced in last month’s budget would cost an additional £31 million. California State University is only partially meeting its bold plan to graduate 40% of its students who started as freshmen by the end of four years. In newly released data this week, the system saw its four-year graduation rate inch to an all-time high of 36.2% this year — more than double the graduation rate it posted in 2013. The system has one year left to make good on its Graduation Initiative 2025 goals, which it debuted in 2015. The splashy effort was buttressed by a combination of system and state funding increases that, over time, reached $400 million annually. The growth in graduation rates overlapped with a 31% spike in freshmen enrollment between 2009 and 2019, meaning the system’s graduation rate increased even as it was absorbing an additional 15,000 students.

The reality is that Trump’s margin over Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris will likely end up around 1.5 points. Exit polls showed that Trump’s favorability rating was just 48% and that more voters chose someone other than Trump. And, as Lindsay points out, Trump fell 4 million votes short of President Joe Biden in 2020. Trump ran away from Project 2025 during the campaign because it was so unpopular. Trump’s team deployed Vice President–elect J.D.

After several months during which engineering and construction work had to be carried out under the constant threat of Russian air strikes, this missile test, which was reported by sources to The Sunday Times, became the culminating test. And all this happened against the background of accusations of corruption by the Ukrainian government, which slowed down the work. Ukraine will face severe winter frosts in the absence of proper protection. His agency has requested 1.4 billion euros for the construction of protective structures (the so-called "third level of protection") for substations. Representatives of the company also stated that the government had not allocated them the funds necessary for the construction of protective structures.

Pete Hegseth’s views on how the US military should fit into our society should be setting off loud alarm bells, but is anyone paying attention? This man has openly said that he will end efforts to weed out rightwing extremists, that there will be a civil war in the US, and “The military and police … will be forced to make a choice”. In his 2020 book Hegseth vows to “mock, humiliate, intimidate, and crush our leftist opponents”, to “attack first”. Instead they are openly vowing to use OUR military to wage violent war on us. Every American should be screaming from the rooftops and demanding Hegseth be rejected in favor of a nominee who will protect our traditions of a nonpolitical military.
