With every pollster in the game bar the increasingly intermittent YouGov having weighed in over the past fortnight, it’s likely that a lean week awaits on the federal polling front, barring the usual weekly Roy Morgan poll. Labor is rated better to tackle the cost of living by 29% with 30% favouring the Coalition, reversing the result in September. The survey was conducted October 31 to November 4 from a sample of 1417. Among the many factors considered by Kevin Bonham are the recount that will be required to fill White’s state parliamentary vacancy, and the appointment to fill Urquhart’s Senate vacancy. The seat has successively been held by Labor, Liberal and the Greens over the past two decades, reflecting a close three-way dynamic similar to that of the partly corresponding federal seat of Macnamara.

Hamas says Israeli female hostage killed in north Gaza combat zone
Hamas’s armed wing said on Saturday that an Israeli woman taken hostage during the October 2023 attack had been killed in a combat zone in northern Gaza, as the Israeli military said it was investigating. The Israeli army told AFP it was looking into the claim. Ten female hostages, including five soldiers, were believed to remain alive in custody before Abu Obeida’s statement, according to an AFP tally. Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed 44,176 people in Gaza, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry that the UN considers reliable.

A doctor advised her that sodium valproate might be one factor affecting both boys’ development. The documents noted that the TGA had reported 109 cases of pregnant Australian women exposed to sodium valproate since 2004. O’Brien acknowledges the “really quite considerable” risks of sodium valproate to unborn children, saying there is “a whole variety of different types of birth defects … across virtually every system”. “For some people, sodium valproate is the only drug that can adequately control their seizures,” he says.

How Public is Scotland's Water?
Publicly owned Scottish Water’s CEO, Alex Plant, earns £295,000 per year, less than any other water company CEO in the UK. Anglian Water outbid Scottish Water and it operates a joint venture with Northumbrian Water Group called Wave. You probably thought, as I once did, that all of Scotland’s water remained in public hands following the Strathclyde Regional Council referendum in 1994 where 97% of voters (75.1% of the electorate turned out) rejected the UK’s proposal to privatise Scotland’s water. Before the last English Labour Holyrood administration was evicted from office in 2007, they half-privatised Scotland’s water, creating Business Stream Ltd, based in Dunfermline. In 2024 Scottish Water also raised prices to domestic customers by 8.8%, but invested £1.02 billion to upgrade and replace water and waste water assets across Scotland.

‘Obscene': Anger after cost of King Charles's coronation revealed
The coronation of King Charles in May 2023 cost taxpayers at least £72m, official figures have revealed. The cost of policing the ceremony was £21.7m, with a further £50.3m in costs racked up by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. About 20 million people in Britain watched Charles crowned at Westminster Abbey on TV, substantially fewer than the 29 million Britons who had watched the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. “I would be very surprised if £72m was the whole cost,” the Republic CEO, Graham Smith, told the Guardian. “But even that kind of money – £72m – is incredible,” Smith added.
