How long have you known about Andrew and Epstein. Have you asked the police to cover up for Andrew. Have you asked the police to cover up for Andrew, Sir? Fair enough for the Royal Lodge, because, you know, it looks far too big for someone of his stature. So I’m happy he’s got stripped of his titles, his royal titles as well.

But there is a subtle and important difference between the idioms that we have used in the past, and the increasingly normalised use of “pass” and “pass away”. I suspect that it is precisely this ambiguity that is making “pass away” so common. But I want to argue that “pass” and “pass away” should not be the default terms that Christians use. AdvertisementJesus did not pass on the cross; nor did he pass away for our sins. We need to reclaim the language of dying and death.

LADY OXFORD* is an unfortunate person. The suggestion that it implies is, of course, that it is only by killing that the killed can properly be remembered — a pagan sentiment, against which Lady Oxford did well to protest. But when she refers to the “hideous and expensive war memorials” in English villages, she is, as is her habit, using the language of absurd and uncontrolled exaggeration. For the greater part, the village war memorials are simple, tasteful, and appropriate, paid for with the pence of the sorrowing bereaved in memory of their beloved dead. *often known as Margot AsquithThe Church Times digital archive is available free to subscribers.
