The dream of a $25,000 electric vehicle for U.S. drivers is in trouble. Rivals, lest they be left behind Tesla and its now-discarded claims, have aimed for cheap EVs of their own. The cheapest car Tesla currently sells in the U.S. starts at around $43,000—or $35,500 with a federal tax credit of $7,500. Building and selling a cheap car for the U.S.—EV or not—was already difficult. And that’s before adding expensive batteries to the equation, before inflation jacked prices up for everything, and before Chinese rivals got really, really good at making really, really inexpensive EVs of their own.

NEW YORK: Elon Musk, the tech billionaire closely allied with US president-elect Donald Trump, met Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in a bid to defuse tensions between Tehran and Washington, The New York Times reported on Thursday. The newspaper quoted anonymous Iranian sources as describing the meeting between the world’s richest person and Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani as “positive”. The two met for more than an hour at a secret location on Monday, the newspaper said. Neither the Trump transition team nor Iran’s mission to the United Nations immediately confirmed the encounter, with the Iranian mission saying it had no comment. Trump in his last term in office tore up a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme negotiated under his predecessor Barack Obama, instead pursuing a policy of “maximum pressure” that included working to force other nations not to buy Iran’s oil.

“Even the mighty have been humbled” by Trump’s victory, the Times of London said of Selzer’s polling failure. Surprise sweep of swing statesTrump’s sweep of the seven vigorously contested swing states surely contributed to perceptions that polls had misfired again. AtlasIntel estimated Trump was ahead in all seven swing states by margins that hewed closely to the voting outcomes. In none of the swing states did AtlasIntel’s polling deviate from the final vote tally by more than 1.3 points, an impressive performance. By margins ranging from 0.9 points to 2.7 points, polls overall understated Trump’s support in the seven swing states, for example.
