As he notes, Jewish voters went for the GOP in higher proportions than previously, so that in this election Jewish voters were largely “up for grabs”—unsure about how to vote. Slogans from the far left like “globalize the intifada,” or “from the river to the sea,” says Torres, alienated Jewish voters, most of whom support Israel. Senor argues that this kind of moral equivalency, or moral equivocation, cost Harris Jewish votes. In the end, since people of color, both middle-class and impecunious ones, are Torres’s constituents, he concludes that, at least in his district, the cost of living far, far outweighed their concern for a war 5,000 miles away. And, to me at least, having sympathies for Israel, it makes Torres look like a guy with an exceedingly bright future in Democratic politics.

The billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times said his paper has “conflated news and opinion” and doubled down on his promise to bring in more conservative voices to balance the left-leaning publication. “It is our responsibility to maintain democracy, to have the views of all our California readers, in fact, the views of all the national readers to be aired. 3 Soon-Shiong said he will bring in new voices that will reflect both the conservative and liberal viewpoints in the country. AFP via Getty ImagesBut his desire to add more conservative voices seems to be at odds with his reason for killing the endorsement, since many right-leaning voices back the Jewish state’s war against Hamas terrorists. APLike the Times, the Washington Post also decided not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential race.

By Richard WinstonLos Angeles TimesLOS ANGELES — Crime is trending down in Los Angeles, with homicides alone on track to fall 15% compared to last year, but newly sworn-in LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell is concerned that statistics aren’t telling the full story. Unreported Crime
Do you believe that unreported crime has a significant impact on crime statistics in your community?
YesNoNot sureMcDonnell said he would rather see the city’s crime numbers rise because it would give him a real picture of the problem and a better idea of what he must do to handle it. “Our officers and professional staff are working very hard to continue to drive those numbers down,” he said. “We also can’t get away from the fact that we need more good people to be interested in this job and to come on the job,” McDonnell said. … For every statistic, there are lived experiences, people whose lives have been upended, whose sense of safety has been shattered.”___©2024 Los Angeles Times.

New Zealand MPs perform haka during hearing in protest of proposed billThe New Zealand Parliament was suspended after Maori members staged a haka to disrupt the vote on a contentious bill to reinterpret an 184-year-old treaty between the British and Indigenous Maori. First signed in 1840 between the British Crown and more than 500 Maori chiefs, the Treaty of Waitangi lays down how the two parties agreed to govern. The interpretation of clauses in the document still guides legislation and policy today. Rulings by the courts and a separate Maori tribunal have progressively expanded Maori rights and privileges over the decades. The ACT New Zealand party, a junior partner in the ruling center-right coalition government, proposed a bill to enshrine a narrower interpretation of the Waitangi treaty in law.
