DANBURY, Conn. -- Caroline Ellison, a former top executive in Sam Bankman-Fried ’s fallen FTX cryptocurrency empire, began her two-year prison sentence Thursday for her role in a fraud that cost investors, lenders and customers billions of dollars. Ellison, 30, reported to the federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She had pleaded guilty and testified extensively against Bankman-Fried, her former boyfriend, before he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Ellison could have faced decades in prison herself, but both the judge and prosecutors said she deserved credit for her cooperation. FTX was one of the world’s most popular cryptocurrency exchanges, known for its Super Bowl TV ad and its extensive lobbying campaign in Washington, before it collapsed in 2022.

The economy is strong overall and has made significant progress toward our goals over the past two years. The labor market has cooled from its formerly overheated state and remains solid. We are committed to maintaining our economy’s strength by supporting maximum employment and returning inflation to our 2 percent goal. decided to take another step in reducing the degree of policy restraint by lowering our policy interest rate by a quarter percentage point. In the near term, the election will have no effects on our policy decisions.

The New York Times Tech Guild asked the publication's readers not to play its games, including Wordle and Connections, in solidarity when it announced that it was going on strike on November 4. Now, the guild has released its own versions of the The Times' games so that readers can still play without crossing its digital picket line. Of course, the workers' versions won't be able to keep your Wordle streak running, but they're pretty much the same games you've been playing on the publication's website. The guild is made up of over 600 unionized tech workers that include software engineers, product managers, data analysts and designers — the people behind the publication's games, as well as The Times' Cooking app. Apparently, the publication's management had fired someone days before a major brain surgery in the past and had used performance review plans as a pretense to fire employees.

Elwood Edwards, a behind-the-scenes graphics and camera operator at local Cleveland television station WKYC whose voice was propelled to worldwide fame after he recorded AOL’s email greeting, ‘You’ve Got Mail,’ has died, according to his former employer. More than 30 years ago, Edwards recorded four iconic lines for what was then a little-known company called America Online. His wife, Karen, worked at Quantum Computer Services, which eventually became AOL, Edwards said in an AOL YouTube video in 2012. She volunteered her husband, and Edwards recorded the phrases on a cassette deck in his living room. “I didn’t enjoy being on camera as much as I enjoyed being behind the scenes,” Edwards said on the podcast.

A federal appeals court panel has reinstated a defamation lawsuit filed by the conservative media watchdog Project Veritas against CNN and remanded the case to a federal trial court in Atlanta. When CNN refused to issue a retraction, Project Veritas sued for defamation in April 2021. In February 2023, Project Veritas turned to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Its founder, James O’Keefe, was removed by the board at Project Veritas after complaints surfaced about his treatment of staff, according to NPR. But CNN did neither, prompting Veritas to file a lawsuit for defamation against CNN in April 2021, which was subsequently thrown out by that court.

Republicans Secure Senate Control With Trump's Support Election results signal significant shifts and ambitious agendas from the GOP as Trump plans his second termThe 2024 U.S. Senate elections, held on November 5, have shaped the political outlook of the country, returning Republicans to the majority and setting the stage for significant legislative changes over the next several years. With the final results still being tallied, Republicans are projected to hold 53 out of the 100 Senate seats. The Democrats, on the other hand, now occupy 45 Senate seats, with some seats still waiting for confirmation. The election results have generated ripples through the Democratic Party, which is left grappling with the reality of losing both control of the Senate and their place within the White House. The 2024 Senate election results certainly held significant weight, and the next few months will be pivotal for both parties as they attempt to shape the legislative agenda and rally support from their constituents.
