Not really. That's a major oversimplification. There are trade deals that reduce costs for American consumers and business and military alliances that stabilize trade and prevent/deter war that would disrupt markets and needlessly raise costs for everyone. I know is popular to make claims that anything outside our own borders is inconsequential or inherently corrupt and a net harm to America but that's generally not the case. There are specific things that are problems that need to be addressed on a case by case basis.

Lilly Ledbetter Leaves Legacy Of Equal Pay Advocacy Trailblazer’s fight for fair wages reshaped U.S. law and inspired countless activistsOn October 12, 2024, Lilly Ledbetter, the American activist whose fight for equal pay inspired landmark legislation, passed away at the age of 86. Her efforts culminated two years later when President Barack Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act on January 29, 2009. This was the first bill he enacted after his inauguration, and it eliminated the restrictive statute of limitations for filing pay discrimination claims, allowing workers to sue within six months of discovering any form of pay discrimination, no matter when it had originally occurred. The film chronicled her life, making her story accessible to new generations and eleviating conversations around equal pay standards. Despite the progress ushered by the Lilly Ledbetter Act, the gender pay gap persists.

The Gaza health ministry said one doctor was killed when he tried to help people wounded by Israeli strikes in Al-Falouja in Jabalia. It added that several medics were wounded when their ambulance came under Israeli fire in the northern and southern Gaza Strip. The United Nations human rights office said the Israeli military appeared to be "cutting off North Gaza completely from the rest of the Gaza Strip." The Israeli military has told residents to leave their homes and head to safety in southern Gaza. Hamas' armed wing said fighters were engaged in fierce battles with Israeli forces in and around Jabalia.

Yes, they’re both, they’re both in good shape. Put on Pavarotti singing “Ave Maria.” Nice and loud. [“Ave Maria” plays] Play “Y.M.C.A.” Go ahead. [“Y.M.C.A.” plays] Nobody’s leaving. All right, turn that music up.

CNN —All Mariah Carey wants for Christmas is to look her best at all times. “I can’t with the overhead lighting,” Carey said. I’m just saying.”“It’s hideous lighting,” she said. “The sun is okay if it’s sunset, I’ll gladly go outside and put a little hat on or whatever and that’ll be pretty because the sunlight caresses your skin.”Although sunlight, Carey pointed out, also has a downside. “But overhead lighting, I don’t think so, honey.”And lest you think she wasn’t serious about her dislike for overhead lighting, Carey added one more thing.

The decision was announced during the company's latest earnings report, highlighting the challenges faced by traditional retail pharmacies amid increasing competition and market pressures. CEO Tim Wentworth shared details of this move, indicating plans to shut nearly 14% of Walgreens locations nationwide, with 500 closures already planned for the upcoming year. He pointed out the years Walgreens spent on acquisitions rather than focusing on optimizing its existing store operations, leading to this rough patch. The recent closure of two Walgreens locations within Milwaukee has left residents feeling the pinch. Plans to close stores at locations identified as underperforming aim to realign the company's operational focus and financial health.

For some time, Noel Millea, the deputy editor on the Real Estate desk, had expressed enthusiasm about obituaries, intrigued by their unique combination of newsy urgency, current history and strong narrative writing. If an editing position opened up on the Obituaries desk, she once told me, she'd certainly raise her hand. She went to Real Estate from the Home section, which was her first stop after joining The Times in 2006 as Home's deputy editor. Along the way she compiled a book of some of her favorite articles - Home: The Best of the New York Times Home Section, published by Rizzoli. Before coming to The Times, Noel was an editor at The Monacelli Press, the co-editor in chief of Surface magazine and a senior editor at Metropolis magazine.

“English, English Lit,” I managed under the bright white beauty light. “Ohhh,” she whispered as she stirred the hot liquid, “you don’t see that a lot anymore.”The scarcity of humanities majors in higher education today is undeniable; between 2012 and 2020, degrees awarded in the humanities fell across the country by 29.6%, with only 7% of freshmen planning to major in the humanities at Harvard University in 2022. When I encounter the notion that humanities students are “a joke,” not as “educated” as STEM students, I think of Robin Williams. Although, indeed, we need STEM careers in order to live well as a body, the soul is found in the humanities; as a human species, we find meaning in our friendships, in nostalgia, in childhood memories, in our romantic connections. As a country, we are in desperate need of togetherness, of understanding, of kindness; these soft skills are what the humanities teach, and what our generation is wholly missing.

For the last several years, The Washington Post has sat out the deal fervor that has swept through much of the media industry. The Post’s new chief executive, Will Lewis, appears interested in changing that. In recent months, the company’s head of corporate development has met with a variety of technology and media companies, exploring deals that could help The Post expand its revenue and subscriptions, one of the people said. In scouting for deals, The Post is following in the footsteps of other media companies, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, that have bought companies that complement their core news businesses, the three people said. The overall goal is to create a growing subscription-based business that is insulated from the vagaries of the news cycle, which can wax and wane throughout the year.
