Boeing Cuts 17,000 Jobs As Strike Halts Production Aerospace giant struggles with deepening losses and delays amid labor unrest and safety concernsBoeing, the aerospace giant, recently announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 17,000 employees, translating to about 10% of its total staff. The timing of the layoff announcement is particularly notable, occurring at the same time as the IAMAW's labor strike, which began following the union's rejection of Boeing's proposed contract. The strike has instigated considerable disruption, halting production lines for several models including the 737 Max, 767, and 777X jets. Before the strike, Boeing was already facing significant economic burdens. Set against its uncertain future, Boeing is gearing up for what many hope will be its turning point.

Some in Washington and elsewhere believe there may be a window for a new push to break the political deadlock in Lebanon to try to ease escalating warWASHINGTON -- With Israel’s sabotage and military operations in Lebanon taking out many of Hezbollah’s senior leaders, some in Washington and elsewhere believe there may be a window for a new push to break the political deadlock in Lebanon to try to ease escalating war. “It’s clear that the people of Lebanon have an interest, a strong interest, in the state asserting itself and taking responsibility for the country and its future," Blinken told reporters Friday in Laos. In the meantime, the worsening political paralysis and stalled measures to alleviate a crippling economic crisis have plunged three-quarters of the population into poverty. As he made his way home from Laos, Blinken spoke with Mikati and Berri to reaffirm the importance of stabilizing the political crisis. He is expected to attend an international conference on Lebanon hosted by France later this month, U.S. officials said.

The Dodgers’ Game 5 victory also marked the first MLB postseason series win of Shohei Ohtani’s career. Hernandez was part of the team’s last World Series championship in 2020 when the team won the title in the COVID-shortened season. He was also part of the team’s World Series losses to the Houston Astros in 2017 and the Boston Red Sox in 2018. Hernandez re-signed with the team on a one-year, $4 million contract to return to the team. Now, Hernandez will help lead the team back to the World Series when they take on the New York Mets in the NLCS.

Israel strikes a Lebanese army checkpointOn Friday, the Lebanese army said an Israeli airstrike hit a building near a military checkpoint in the southern Bint Jbeil province. The Israeli military said it had been targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon when reports emerged that it had hit several Lebanese army soldiers. The Israeli army said it investigated the incident but remained “unaware of any Lebanese army facilities found in the area of the strike." The only direct clash between the two national armies occurred on Oct. 3, when Israeli tank fire hit a Lebanese army post also in the area of Bint Jbeil, killing a soldier and prompting Lebanese soldiers to return fire. The Israeli military had no comment on the reports.
