So it's that time of year when media sites start posting their preseason picks for conferences. Thus far, the projections seem to be reasonably consistent, with CBS Sports putting Ohio State to finish 6th in the B1G, ESPN putting Ohio State 7th, and The Athletic has the Bucks at 9th in the B1G, along with the 'official' B1G Media Pool in early October that picked OSU at 8th. All of those finishes would likely put Ohio State in the NCAA tourney, but in none of them would the Bucks be favored to make the Sweet 16 or any deeper run. *ichigan seems to be the team most split on, ranging from #2 in the B1G to #7. For a team that brought two likely top-5 NBA draft picks, the media seems to be rather down on Rutgers, with them somewhere between 9th and 11th.

Nicholas Pryor, veteran actor who starred in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘Port Charles,’ dies at 89
Nicholas Pryor, the seasoned actor who enjoyed a nearly 350-episode run on soap drama “Port Charles” and shared the screen with Tom Cruise in “Risky Business,” has died. Pryor died Monday of cancer in his home in Wilmington, North Carolina, his agent Susan Tolar Walters confirmed Wednesday to The Times. “The entire General Hospital Family is saddened to hear of Nicholas Pryor’s recent passing,” the “GH” account tweeted Tuesday. Beyond TV, Pryor’s career also included appearances in films “Damien: Omen II,” “Airplane!,” “Pacific Heights,” “Collateral Damage” and, most recently, “Halloween Kills.”Nicholas Probst was born Jan. 28, 1935, in Baltimore. In addition to his wife, Pryor is survived by his daughter Stacey Pryor and his grandchildren Auguste and Avril Bas.

After 40 seasons owning the team, the Pohlad family said in a statement on social media Thursday they will explore a sale of the franchise. “For the past 40 seasons, the Minnesota Twins have been part of our family’s heart and soul,” Twins executive chair Joe Pohlad, a third-generation owner, said in a statement. Sea lion dies after being shot in California. Officials offer $20,000 reward
The 2-year-old male sea lion was discovered between two lifeguard stations at the Orange County beach on Aug. 7, NOAA Fisheries announced in an Instagram post Wednesday. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center retrieved the animal, but it died the next day. An examination revealed that the sea lion had a fresh gunshot wound in its back. The federal Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits harassing, hunting, capturing or killing sea lions and other marine mammals. Dead or stranded marine animals can be reported to the West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network at (866) 767-6114.

A strong geomagnetic storm could cause colorful auroras over Northern California
“Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface,” according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. Increased solar activity causes auroras that dance around Earth’s poles, known as the northern lights, or aurora borealis, and southern lights, or aurora australis. But if the storm escalates to a G5, auroras could be visible across southern states and elsewhere around the world. Before then, the last G5 storm to hit Earth was in 2003, resulting in power outages in Sweden and damaging power transformers in South Africa. The solar storm in May was the most successfully mitigated space weather storm in history, Dahl said.

I realized this morning that I’m not nearly as excited for CBJ this year as I usually am. I thought I’d be more excited by now but I’m just not. And it seems to be just a CBJ thing, because I watched some highlights of other games and was so happy hockey is back. Obviously Johnny is the reason why, but already losing Jenner and Vronk for apparently over half the season just makes everything feel extra hopeless. I’m hoping the young guys grow, and the team looks better under Evason, and that can make me feel differently over the course of the season.
