Many eligible items are already on sale, and saving an extra 8% in tax is a great deal. On large purchases, especially for families with several children, it can be a big savings. It’s not worth fighting the packed parking lots and crowded stores to save $8 on $100. There are too many ineligible items on the tax-exempt list. It depends on how well back-to-school shopping goes in the meantime.

Such upheaval could drive M&A activity within software and the broader technology industry, and the business of software — the preeminence of the software industry and the organizing principles of software companies — could change. GitHub claims that 46% of new code is already developed by AI.6 As generative software development becomes more pervasive, the ability of individuals, teams and enterprises to build their own custom software improves, and the pricing power of packaged software providers decreases. Profits of the software industry may be redistributed to customers, and beneficial investment by software companies may be reduced. As the customers of today’s software companies replace existing products with generative-AI-powered solutions, software company profits may come under pressure. In some ways, generative software development is arguably favorable to emerging software companies, because it reduces the resources necessary to develop any piece of software.

The Harris campaign did not comment. An Ipsos poll published on Thursday found Harris had widened her lead over Trump since late July. She leads Trump 42% to 37%, compared to a July 22-23 Reuters/Ipsos survey, which showed her up 37% to 34% over Trump. Trump also on Thursday mocked the size of Harris' campaign crowds, even though they have matched his of late. Echoing a recent criticism from his campaign, Trump criticized Harris for not doing a press interview since launching her campaign.

And in 2024, Trump is giving his supporters fewer opportunities to form a crowd. “Trump has also repeatedly raised the large crowds that Harris is getting compared with [President Joe] Biden,” Dawsey and Scherer report. From July 1 to Aug. 10, 2016, Trump held 22 rallies, including six days on which he held multiple rallies. In 2020, the landscape was different for two reasons: the restrictions that accompanied the coronavirus pandemic and the fact that Trump was president. He held public events on nearly every day in July and August of that year, including a number of rallies held by conference call.

recover, a new U.S. study has found, which could push estimates for the number of birds killed flying into buildings far above 1 billion a year. Hitting buildings is a significant threat to wild birds. Estimates of U.S. mortality rates from building crashes are based only on the number of birds found dead or mortally injured, not those that die later of their injuries. In the latest study, published in the journal PLOS One on Wednesday, the researchers looked at birds that were taken to wildlife rehabilitation centers to assess their long-term survival rates. https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2024/08/08/annual-bird-death-toll-building-crashes/
