The World Health Organization said this week that the virus is increasing in at least 84 countries despite perceptions that the pathogen is a remnant of the past. The rise in global cases comes during pandemic fatigue and a decline in testing for the virus and reporting of cases. Those bans include exceptions for medical mask-wearing, but critics worry people trying to avoid covid could still be harassed. “We don’t have any data that suggests that the variants that are circulating now cause more severe disease,” Pekosz said. The absence of comprehensive data on total coronavirus cases hinders the assessment of variant severity, because researchers cannot determine the proportion of cases that lead to hospitalizations or deaths.

There have been no reports of abnormalities at nuclear power plants following the quake, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters. The quake occurred at around 4:43 p.m. (0743 GMT) off Miyazaki prefecture on the western major island of Kyushu, the JMA said. Some of the tsunami advisories, originally issued for the Pacific coast of the major western islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, have been lifted, except for Miyazaki. A JMA panel, convened after the quake, believes there is now a "relatively higher chance" of another major earthquake occurring near western Japan's Pacific coast, Hayashi added. More than 15,000 people were killed in a magnitude 9 quake in 2011 that triggered a devastating tsunami and triple reactor meltdowns at a nuclear power plant.

Liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist medication that first won FDA approval in 2010, may reduce cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s patients. It remains to be seen whether semaglutide, liraglutide, or other GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs, will receive FDA approval for the treatment of AD. Novo Nordisk announced in 2020 that an oral formulation of semaglutide would enter phase 3 development for Alzheimer’s disease. In humans, there is evidence suggesting that type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for cognitive decline, but GLP-1 receptor agonists, like semaglutide, can potentially mitigate this risk in people with type 2 diabetes. Unlike Kisunla, however, GLP-1 receptor antagonists do not carry the potential side effect of brain bleeds or swelling.
