COP28 hosts UAE and Saudi Arabia both face the likelihood of a 72 per cent GDP growth reduction. This highlights the threat posed to the region from the expansion of fossil fuels which make up 75 per cent of greenhouse gases. The study highlights the amount of damage caused to their GDP by climate change, compared to a scenario where climate change didn’t take place. “At COP28, we must commit to a just and equitable phase out of fossil fuels. Agreeing to phase out all fossil fuels is the single most significant thing that COP28 could achieve in reducing emissions and turning the tide on climate change.

China’ Customs Tariff Commission announced earlier this week the removal of tariffs for taxable products from six African countries, State-run Xinhua news agency reports. In November last year, Beijing took similar measures for nine African countries namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea‑Bissau, Lesotho, Malawi, Sao Tome and Principe, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Three other African countries, Djibouti, Togo, and Rwanda had benefited from the same measures in September the same year. Chinese agricultural imports from Africa are significant and growing, and the country has become the continent’s second largest export market after the USA. (File photo: CFP) Egypt’s headline inflation dips to 34.6% in November Published on:Read < 1 minuteEgypt witnessed a decline in its annual urban consumer price inflation in November, marking a decrease from 35.8% in October to 34.6%, as reported by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) on Sunday. This shift was attributed to a deceleration in the rate of food price escalations, according to CAPMAS data. The trajectory of annual inflation had been upward for the past two years, reaching a peak of 38.0% in September. However, the November reading indicates a downward trend, representing the lowest inflation rate since May. The data suggests a noteworthy moderation in inflationary pressures, particularly influenced by a slowdown in the acceleration of food prices.

An intriguing new North-South binary has emerged in our political debate after the elections in four major states last week. The argument might look persuasive — that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rules the North and the South continues to reject it, creating a horizontal divide in the Indian polity marked by the Vindhyas. I have used the description “intriguing” as a euphemism for the kind of simplistic and lazy theorising that calls for something stronger. First of all, the challenge to the BJP’s supremacy is not limited to the South. A quick look at the political map of India will show that the BJP is not a North-centric party but a party of its own heartland.

In 2020, the Abraham Accords normalized Israel’s relations with the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Bahrain. Israeli relations with Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda, meanwhile, have been at an all-time high. Encouraged by the Donald Trump administration in the United States, Jair Bolsonaro’s Brazil, Jeanine Añez in Bolivia, and others espoused very right-wing pro-Israel views. In the United States, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa, the influence of Christian Zionists and evangelical churches has afforded Israel powerful friends. Europe’s renewed vassalage to the United States since the war in Ukraine began does not bode well for a truly independent position on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

RIYADH - Northern Trust Corp (NASDAQ: )., a global financial services firm with $1.3 trillion in assets under management, has announced the establishment of its Middle East headquarters in Riyadh. The firm's decision aligns with Saudi Arabia's impending regulatory change, which mandates international companies to have regional bases within the kingdom by January 2024 to partake in government contracts. The strategic move by Northern Trust follows its successful acquisition of a license from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Investment. Al Suhaimi's leadership is expected to strengthen Lazard's regional foothold and enhance its advisory capabilities. Both Northern Trust's and Lazard's expansions into Riyadh represent a significant endorsement of Saudi Arabia's efforts to diversify its economy and bolster its status as an influential financial hub.
