Germany is looking to outsource the processing of asylum applications to Africa amid pressure from liberal junior coalition member FDP and a general rise in asylum applications, in a move similar to the UK’s controversial plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. As EU countries currently face an overall surge in irregular migration and asylum claims, Germany has experienced a more than 70% increase in asylum applications in 2023 so far compared to last year – a trend that the FDP wants to address by sending asylum seekers to non–EU countries for application processing. In compliance with human rights standardsThe FDP’s proposal is reminiscent of the UK government’s controversial scheme to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing, which was announced last year. The UK has already faced obstacles in implementing the scheme, with legislation under review since the European Court of Human Rights halted flights to Rwanda over human rights concerns, prompting the UK to threaten to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights if its policy is blocked. It would have to be reviewed if asylum claims could be outsourced “in compliance with the Geneva Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights”, said Jurisch.

While the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas has increased the risk of an all out war which may involve several countries in the region, top management of L&T believes that ongoing conflict is unlikely to impact its operations.“I think the war in the Middle East is an unfortunate development. In our case, most of the orders that we win in the Middle East are in Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia, as we speak now, seems to have steered away from entering directly into any kind of conflict or conflicting situation,” said R. Shankar Raman , Whole-time Director and Chief Financial Officer at L&T.“..given the quality of the programs that they (Saudis) have unleashed, and where we are participating, it is unlikely in our assessment today that the current Israel, Hamas conflict is going to derail the program.

Signs of the rift within Israel’s establishment deepen even as Netanyahu declares the next phase of the war in Gaza. It took one tweet over the weekend for cracks to emerge within the Israeli political establishment. The outrage was such that the prime minister deleted the tweet, and in an unusually sober tone, apologised for his words. Israel’s longest-serving prime minister first took office in 1996, and has been in power for 13 of the last 14 years. And though the war cabinet might be divided, expanding the government to include senior military members – as Netanyahu has done – could still serve his interests politically, he added.
